3.0 out of 5 stars A high level overview of the marque 8 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The author uses a "star rating" system on the possible collector value of the varied VW models since the Beetle's creation. While useful at high level, the book glosses over some of the details between model years, such as why the 1967 Beetle is sought after by folks who plan on driving 'em rather than collecting dust in the garage. Some more detail on what makes some models more desired by collectors and hobbyists would be welcome. For the beginning VW nut, this book ought to be in the collection, but the hard core VW fan, spend your money elsewhere as you know most of what is in here. Good, clear phots for the most part and the editing of the text decent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beginner's guide to VW 7 Jun 2012
By Smiler
Format:Paperback
I am a confirmed Beetle lover, so this was a must buy for me as I wanted to know more about the Beetle and VW too. It fitted the bill. Lots of pictures, lots of information. Good bathroom reference material.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice history book but, not a buyer's guide. 3 Jan 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a good overview of VW models and should provide an adequate starting point for those just bitten by the VW bug. Most VW fanatics, however, should know everything here. As for a buying guide, this book is not helpful as it doesn't go into detail on features available by model year and doesn't include a summary of potential problems to look out for when in the market for a used VW.

2.0 out of 5 stars A general overview of VWs but not a detailed buyers guide 17 July 2000
By Onur DEMİRDOGEN - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for getting detailed info about vintage VWs before I tried to buy one. I disappointed after reading it because I had learned all knowledge available in this book from the World Wide Web before. This book is only for getting general information about historical background of VW cars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Any Volkswagen Enthusiast 22 July 2014
By Macy Banton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My first car was a 1967 Beetle. Over the past forty-two years I've owned a total of ten Volkswagens (including Beetles, Super Beetles, Rabbit Convertibles/Cabriolets & Jettas). That being the case, I enjoy reading about the history of the marque as well as keeping abreast of the different models available over the years. The Volkswagen Illustrated Buyer's Guide provides the reader with an overview of just that, the history of Volkswagen, as well as useful information on different Volkswagen models available (thru 1998). Like many of these 'Buyer's Guides' this is an enjoyable book full of interesting facts and information, perhaps not a buyer's guide in the truest sense of the word, but it is a wonderful book for any Volkswagen enthusiast.
I love reading about the history of Volkswagen, as well as reading about interesting models such as the original 111 Sedan (the Beetle), the Super Beetle, the Karmann Ghia, the original Beetle Convertible, the 'Thing' and even more contemporary classics such as the Scirocco and the Rabbit Convertible/Cabriolet. If you've owned Volkswagens in the past (or present), I'm sure you will find this delightful book very interesting & enjoyable reading. Highly Recommend!
5.0 out of 5 stars Good Info 8 Feb 2010
By Jason Moore - Published on Amazon.com

I dod not buy this book to use for purchasing a Volkswagen. However, I found the information contained to be useful, and opened my options for some alternate vehicle purchases. Like all guides, this book is already outdated in it's second printing. It ended with the 1999 model year. The good news is the older model's info will never change. The author uses his own five-star rating scheme to show the potential of collector vehicles, and some of his stars are silly in my opinion.
