Laibach have created a template for music as art. Emerging from the ashes of punk filtered via Transistor airwaves into a Central European mindset trapped in the iron grip of a softcore authoritarianism they imbibed the anger. Drawing elements of Lydon and P-Orridge incorporating John Heartfield they fused the conceptual philosophical framework of Dada with their Centeuro culture to create something unique. This album is one side a multi faceted mask drawing together a number of surrogate national anthems to fuse some passion into the moribund dirges.
The result is something haunting, ethereal and deeply moving. The music incorporates critiques of national mindsets chiding the Germans to return to farming, the British for their arrogance, the Americans for vision drift and so forth. This hit the mark according the UTube comments pages where outraged nationalists have voiced their wounds.
The music however is sublime as it all somehow makes perfect sense apart from the fact Laibach are not as world dominant as U2 or Tracey Emin. Why is it that mediocrity is rewarded and true visionaries are derided?
