"Highly recommended."--Choice

Product Description

This impressive scientific resource presents up-to-date information on ten thousand years of volcanic activity on Earth. In the decade and a half since the previous edition was published new studies have refined assessments of the ages of many volcanoes, and several thousand new eruptions have been documented. This edition updates the book's key components: a directory of volcanoes active during the Holocene; a chronology of eruptions over the past ten thousand years; a gazetteer of volcano names, synonyms, and subsidiary features; an extensive list of references; and, an introduction placing these data in context. This edition also includes new photographs, data on the most common rock types forming each volcano, information on population densities near volcanoes, and other features, making it the most comprehensive source available on Earth's dynamic volcanism.

This is a comprehensive listing of all the known volcanic eruptions of the human era.
This is not for someone who wishes to learn about volcanoes, the narrative content is low, but for a vulcanologist it is an excellent sourcebook. In here are listed all the volcanoes that are known to have erupted in the Holocene by geographical region and in date order, with the type of eruption, and the major eruptions with fatalities. As a library reference or to someone interested in the statistics of volcanic eruption it is a superb reference, but it is not a textbook of vulcanology and anyone looking for such would be better advised to seek out Harald Sigurdssons Encyclopedia of Volcanoes. If you have that already, this makes one heck of an appendix!
The late Tom Simkin, one of the co-authors, was an expert on Krakatau, so it is fitting that Anak Krakatau should be on the cover (incidentally an image from the eruption sequence I witnessed in 2009, but not one of mine!)

Volcanoes of The World is an incredible feat, it has everything you could possibly want to know about Volcanoes. For anyone wanting to buy its there are a few things: 1, The book is very large and certainly not a coffee table book; 2, For anyone wanting to READ about Volcanology, this isn't the book for you, it is mostly a Reference Book, packed with information; 3, the book only contains reports of eruptions pre-2010, so anyone wanting to look at more recent eruptions (e.g. Eyjafajallajokull 2010 eruption) won't find it in the book.

The book is written by the people who run the Smithsonian's "Global Volcanism Program" and it is basically a written format of the website. in addition to the information from the website, the book contains a 40 page long section which explains things like the Volcanic Explosivity Index and Types of Volcano. The book also includes a list of recorded Faitalities and Evactuations and Rock Types of each volcano.

It is an amazing achivement and perfect for any volcano fanatic who needs info on any volcano.

I would highly recommend the third edition of Volcanoes of the World.
This is an authoritative, well illustrated and updated version of the
1994 edition of Volcanoes of the World.
