This is an exceptionally well written book with similes like "Earth's surface is like a giant jigsaw puzzle made of billions of tiny pieces that mostly fit together well.." There is a picture of a soda bottle to show how volcanoes work. The photographs are beautiful--vivid and clear and so dramatic that you can almost feel the heat. As an adult, I learned much about volcanoes that I didn't know: they are named after Vulcan, the Greek god of fire; there are 1500 active volcanoes on the earth's surface, most around the "Ring of Fire," in Indonesia, and so many more in the ocean. In Hawaii, I remember walking over black shiny rocks with tiny crystals. Now I know they are Basalt rocks. Children, especially those with scientific interests will be fascinated with this book!
