Classic Bix in very good transfers 4 May 2009
By Robert Auld - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The only criticism I have of this well produced release is related to the source material itself--many Beiderbecke recordings feature him in settings not really worthy of his transcendent talent. Further, some of the recordings here gave him very little, or even no solo space. But that is a basic problem with the recorded legacy of Bix Beiderbecke. Hot jazz players of the 1920's in general had to struggle to be recorded at all, let alone under ideal conditions. That had to wait until the 1930's, when jazz finally became the dominant popular music, and by then, Bix was dead.

A particular virtue of this Naxos issue is the care that was taken with transferring the recordings. The quality of the source material itself varies, but David Lennick and Andrew Lang appear to have done whatever could be done to bring out the sound of each selection. Noise reduction has been used, but not at the expense of the music. This disc could serve as a model for how to do transfers of old 78s with current techniques. That the booklet also includes complete information about each recording and a perceptive essay by Scott Yarnow adds to the value of this CD release. Highly recommended.

HOT JAZZ FROM THE ROARING TWENTIES 15 Nov 2007

BIX BEIDERBECKE RECORDINGS FROM THE 1920'S FEATURING SONGS RECORDED WITH WITH JEAN GOLDKETTE, FRANKIE TRUMBAUER, JOE VENUTI, EDDIE LANG, AND OTHERS. THIS CD IS A TREASURE TROVE OF "HOT JAZZ" MUSIC FROM THE 20'S. GREAT CD. BIX HAD GREAT CHOPS AND COULD REALLY PLAY THAT TRUMPET.
Bix on RCA 7 Sep 2013

I love Bix . He is heard as part of ensembles so his solo's are brief. The remastering is quite good for a major label. A wonderful booklet from the late great Richard M. Sudhalter. Do any of you remember his radio show heard on WBAI in NYC from the 1980's? I really miss him. He was a fine musician and author. You can pick this up cheaply;it;s worth it. Thanks Amazon.

It's a darn shame this is out of print, as these are the cleanest transfers
in a long time from the Goldkette and Whiteman recordings. In fact some
alternate takes from a few tunes are here, and in a couple of cases
Bix's contributions are livelier. BMG, surely you can give us this again,
and furthermore a few more Goldkette tracks could be included, they weren't all
bland. Since BMG and SONY, is now a joint venture, How about a Bix Box set that
would include all this plus a representative selection of the Columbia AND Okeh
material. Something like the Tommy Dorsey box from 2005. This would have a virtually
unbroken span of Bix from 1926 to 1930. How about it guys?
