Book Description

26 Jun 2006
This book presents a nostalgic account of life growing up in wartime Scotland. Born in Dundee in 1938, Maureen Reynolds grew up in wartime Scotland, a young girl surrounded by adult concerns - the endless queuing for rations that never seemed to stretch quite far enough, the blackouts and air raids - and as she came of age, a whole generation seemed to suddenly do the same, with the rise of the Teddy Boy and rock and roll. A memoir written with the grace and lucidity of a novel, "Voices in the Street" chronicles a life of typical proportions with all the heartache and hope that entails, and reminds us that the most commonplace stories, properly told, can give a greater insight into a time and place than any of the more exceptional. With great candour and earnestness, Maureen Reynolds' reminiscences of growing up with her wise, kind Grandad, of lumpy porridge, of tramcars and of broth night, of finding her love and then seeing him borrowed for the sake of National Service, will strike a chord with all those who see their own memories reflected there, and for everyone else "Voices in the Street" provides an intricate, caring portrait of a life and of a generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just wonderful... 11 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
I first came across this book in Fintry library (which is in Dundee!). I picked it up to read and devoured it. After doing so I went out immediately to buy my own copy, as well as an additional 3 copies for Christmas presents. It was such a wonderful book and so well written. You become so engaged in Maureen Reynold's story and I found myself looking out for places and streets named in the book as I drove around Dundee.
There are few books I enjoy returning to, but this is one that I find myself re-reading every couple of months (my copy has become quite dog eared!)as it is, without doubt, a highly enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer nostalgia 1 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Voices in the Street by Maureen Reynolds took me back to my own childhood and early years in Dundee.

Well written, the book painted a vivid description of Dundee dwelling in the 1940s and 1950 and mention of the Blackness trams and street references to the area around the Hilltown took me back 50 years and evoked memories and much nostalgia.
