Book Description

The story of the the French Foreign Legion as seen through the eyes of the men who have served in it

Product Description

The French Foreign Legion has a reputation as the most formidable of military institutions. Created as a means of absorbing foreign troublemakers, the unit spearheaded French colonialism in North Africa during the nineteenth century. Accepting volunteers from all parts of the world, the Legion acquired an aura of mystery - and a less than enviable reputation for brutality within its ranks.

Voices of the Foreign Legion looks at how the Legion selects its recruits, where they come from and why they seek a life of hardship and danger. It also analyses the outfit's 'robust' attitude to discipline, questions why desertion is a perennial problem and assesses the Legion's military achievements since its formation in 1831.

This is the real story of the Legion, featuring first-hand accounts from the men who have fought in its ranks. Its scope ranges from the conquest of the colonies in Africa and the Far East, through the horrors of the two World Wars, to the bitter but ultimately hopeless battles to maintain France's imperial possessions. The story is brought fully up to date with accounts and anecdotes from those foreign legionnaires who continue to fight for French interests around the globe.

Could be better. 6 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
A reasonable general oral history of the FFL, there are some snippets in it from accounts I had never read before but it relies too much on quotations from other books that will most likely be familiar to those interested in the Legion (eg Simon Murray's work).
If you are new to the subject of the Legion and its history then it is worth the price, for those wanting a little more then it is likely to be a disapointing read.

By Mr X
Format:Hardcover
As the first review states a great overview of the experience of legionnaires from the beginnings of the legion in the 1830s right up to today. I liked it how the author described legionnarie's experiences from all different ages and also explained (for example) the threads that run through men's motivations for signing up across the centuries.

As for the second part of the book, this describes the legion's history. It is also well written and is not heavily weighted in favour of modern times but gives equal weight to all eras. I think the only improvement that could be made is that comparisons could be drawn between the legion and other elite forces around the world.

A valuable insight. 6 July 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book takes a long look at the French Foreign Legion, from its inception in 1831 to the present day. The author provides a historical framework, with the bulk of the text coming from the legionnaires themselves. The book opens with details on recruitment, training and discipline over the ages, and then examines life in the Legion before considering the Legion's campaigns. Highlights include the conquest of Algeria and the fighting in the trenches during World War I, as well as the loss of Indochina which culminated in the epic battle for Dien Bien Phu. An excellent introduction to the Foreign Legio
