BFI Flipside presents

VOICE OVER (DVD + Blu-ray)
A Film by Christopher Monger

THE FLIPSIDE: rescuing weird and wonderful British films from obscurity and presenting them in new high-quality editions.

'Fats' Bannerman is enjoying success as the writer and presenter of Thus Engaged a romantic radio serial about the lives and loves of a Regency heroine. But when grim reality violently intrudes into Fats' life, his frail fantasies become unbalanced and his ability to separate fact from fiction breaks down, with devastating consequences.

Featuring a compelling central performance from the great British screen actor Ian McNeice, this controversial film from award-wining Hollywood director Christopher Monger caused a sensation upon its original release.

Voice Over is the most recent production that the BFI provides throught its inspiring Flipside series, as it was produced in the early 80s. The film is a psychological thriller providing a character stufy for Fats (Ian McNeice) the insecure and isolated radio anchor, who's driven by different women to take dramatic shifts in both his show & life. Obviously the film was poorly preserved, though the BFI has done a great job restoring it. The poor production value (a totally independent film) served the film on some levels especially when the director uses the radio to explain the success of Fats and his show. But in some other scenes, especially in Fats' last show scene, the film isn't ambitious on the visual levels as it is on the sound or the narrative level. Nevertheless, the film is a haunting thriller that is available now thanks to the BfI, & I recommend it for all the genre fans, and its a must keep for all Flipside collecction fans.

This movie took me back to the fledgling days of Channel 4 in the early 80s - confrontational drama, red triangle movies, grim realism (wasn't always the phoney 'reality' gubbins of today young 'uns!). As such there's plenty of gruelling authenticity in this tale of a talk DJ losing his marbles. Iain McNeice is excellent and there's some blacker than black humour, especially involving the mutation of his show from genteel parlour drama to proto 'Jane Austin is a vampire' type horror. Problem is would you want to watch it more than once? Possibly, but it's definitely not one you'll be digging out for a beery Friday night. Haven't watched the companion movie yet, truth be told I'm waiting for a particularly wet Wednesday afternoon for that pleasure. Picture quality is ropier than usual for the BFI, it's all about the rarity value here not visual pleasure.

It great to this unknown Welsh gem which is quite a dark film and great performance by Ian McNiece. I am bit surprise on how much Cardiff has change in the last 30 years.
