Stormin Berry 19 May 2009
Had this phone now for a couple of months, and at first I had a lot of re-sets and battery pulls, needless to say I wasn't best pleased. However, with the latest firmware releases it is turning out to be a real top notch phone. I am now using release .141 and I haven't had a single battery pull and the overall operation is so much better. Battery life is better (but still not briliant - but it is a large screen device so what do you expect) Now the apps store is on-line this machine will just get better with time. I'm so glad I didn't get rid of it. Have faith Storm owners and keep with the program.

Early purchasers of the Storm have had a rough ride with faults and snags leading to large numbers of bad reviews. RIM have been busy fixing many of the problems and the latest version (4.7.0.78) of the software supplied with new phones and available for existing users to download is much better.

Not being an existing 'Crackberry' or iPhone fan I came to my new phone with no existing prejudice. I have found it easy to get to know and I think there is much to like. I avoided previous Blackberry phones partly because their physical keyboards are too small for my chunky fingers and their screens too small for my middle-aged eyes! The Storm fixes both of these problems and presents a reliable interface for all multi-media uses. The screen is clear and bright used inside or out, and already I have found it great for browsing the internet on the go - and I very much like the positive feedback from the click-screen. I'm also amazed at both the quality and reliablity of the 3G signal even inside the house in a 'marginal' area. I can make and take calls inside - which was not possible with my previous phone on the same network. Email and messaging is excellent - this phone may even get me entering the txt age to keep in touch with what the kids are up to on Facebook!

Putting tunes on the device is easy - use iTunes or Windows Media Player to synch or simply drag-and-drop using a filer in Windows. Once on the phone I found the music playing interface to be straight forward, intuitive and pleasing to the eye. More importantly, however, the sound quality (through my own quality headphones) is much better than from my iPOD - not actually too dificult since Apple sound quality is rubbish but a real bonus meaning I won't have to carry my iPOD everywhere as well as the phone. Space on the micro SD cards is generous but not unlimited at 8Gb but with the price of cards coming down all the time it is quite feasable to have varying collections of music on different cards to suit different moods. So that's another feature that's put a smile on my face - my only minor niggle is that the headphone socket (thankfully just a standard one so you can easily use your own favourite headphones) is on the side of the device and the plug comes out too easily in your pocket!

I've not yet been able to try out the photo and video capabilities of the phone yet but as soon as I get a suitable media card I'll update the review.

In summary, if you've been put off the Storm by the initial poor reviews then think again. If you are an iPOD fanatic or already proficient using the real keyboard on a Blackberry then I doubt you will take to the Storm quickly and easily. If you want to give 3G a whirl and have a good all round phone for calls, mobile internet and media playing then give the Storm a try in your local store before deciding.

I've had my Storm for about 7 months now (having had a variety of blackberrys in recent years), and I absolutely love it.

That said, I can also understand the negative reviews here, because for the first week or two of use, this device is utterly annoying when compared to any of the more conventional keyboard blackberrys. It takes a long time to get used to typing accurately on the keypad, and yes the early versions did lock-up more than they should have (with battery pullouts needed). But once you've persevered with the Storm for a few weeks, it actually becomes a very intuitive and actually quite effective to use as a business email & phone.

Battery life is the Achilles heel, so with an hour or two of phone calls under your belt each day it does need its daily juice. But there is a large screen to power up as well, so bear that in mind. Also, the post-upgrade versions are generally a lot quicker than the earlys that generated so much bad press for RIM. I've had both, and I much prefer the speed and response of the current versions.

What I'm particularly impressed with though is the flexibility of the Storm as a media device. When I'm travelling I like to rip DVDs to MP4 and watch them on the blackberry at a relatively high res of 480x376. The touch screen is great for controlling playback. Plug in a decent pair of earphones and you'll find the sound is excellent for listening to MP3 music aswell. And photos can be whizzed through with a simple swish of the finger across the screen.

And that leads to a simple conclusion. What I also like about this device is the fact that it's not an iPhone. I don't really subscribe to the Apple "lock-in" mentality, so not being limited to a single UK network provider is just how it should be.
