Bought this for a long trip to SA. Needn't have bothered though. You can get the same thing in just about any supermarket for 50p or less. Previous reviewer was right in that you have to activate it in a Vodacom store. He didn't say that they won't be happy to do it, since you didn't buy the SIM from them! I managed to persuade the folks at Jo'burg airport, but I think that was because I looked pathetic and worn out after a long flight. ANyway the SIM worked, was easy to top up at any supermarket, though an option to do it over the phone would have been good.

The card is good value, and "Does what it says on the tin" but under the South African legislation I still had to visit the Vodacom shop at Johannesburg International as the voice prompt registration, once I had inserted the sim, wil not allow the phone to activate.
This process with photo ID only takes 5 minutes, and at least I took the chance to top up the card before commencing my holiday.
Probably just as easy buying the card in SA though!

If you are planning to get your SIM established ahead of time this no longer works. Due to RICA legislation you must show up in person with your passport in South Africa at a Vodacom store to prove your identity and get a phone number. It also appears that there are no minutes included in this "prepaid" card, only SMS's and not much else. No point in buying ahead.
