Review

I love this book. Write some more!

Joseph W. Guenther, University of Wisconsin, Platteville

I like the overall presentation of the text. Given the emphasis on reading in middle and high school, I would think it would have a wide audience. I would consider this text as a supplemental or suggested text as it does enhance the content of the course I teach.

Nancy Williams, University of South Florida

This book contains useful information and offers helpful resources for those who would like further information. The chapters contain useful graphics and examples, and provide the reader with a solid background on words, word origins and the development of our vocabulary knowledge. The book also includes step-by-step strategies for sharing this knowledge with students.

Margot Kinberg, National University

Each strategy is described in detail, weaving research with examples from classrooms. I believe teachers can easily find new ideas for teaching content vocabulary, and understand when each strategy is most effective. I am especially impressed with the examples.

Cathy Blanchfield, California State University Fresno

The text is well organized, theoretically sound, and the strategies are practical and effective. Excellent strategies for addressing the word-specific challenges for English learners. Excellent ideas and activities.

 Jackie Glasgow, Ohio University

A fantastic book with many ideas and lists that can even be used in upper primary, as well as Secondary School. Able spellers in Years 5 and 6 (Grades 4 and 5) can be stretched using the lists in the book with Latin, Greek derivations etc. I have yet to digest the whole book, as it has only recently arrived, but I am looking forward to using it together with the Words their Way series.Vocabulary Their Way: Word Study with Middle and Secondary Students (Words Their Way)

5.0 out of 5 stars Money well spent! 23 Feb 2011
By Betsy Geiselman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
For my Master's thesis, I did a small study of the effectiveness of this book by incorporating its strategies into my classroom activities. I learned so much by using the materials in this book and so did my students. The results I got from using the strategies and materials in the book were overwhelmingly positive, and I would recommend it to any teacher of middle school or high school students. I read an abundance of research articles on vocabulary acquisition and instruction prior to reading Vocabulary Their Way, and I can say without a doubt that it utilizes the most current research and best practices in vocabulary instruction. I wholeheartedly recommend buying this book, reading it from cover to cover, and incorporating its practices in your classroom. Vocabulary Their Way is organized in a logical way, and it is easy to use as a reference. The activities, assessments, and games included are all thoughtfully prepared and ready for use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vocabulary Transformation 21 Oct 2010
By Lizbeth J. Phillips - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I teach middle school students in a rural part of the Southeast. My students come to me each fall needing help with reading and vocabulary skills. To become a more fluent reader and writer, a student needs positive experience in vocabulary acquisition that is NOT copying words from the back of a textbook. I've used the Words Their Way series since 2003 for remediation and reinforcement for my students, and I've used it for tutoring elementary school students whose parents know I use WTW as a major part of literacy curricula. When I saw Vocabulary Their Way was on the market, I ordered one immediately. My middle schoolers love the word studies that I introduce in class. In just a few months, nearly all my students are directly benefiting from regular VTW activities. The book is easy to use and is versatile enough to fit the constraints of any content-driven class.

Nothing new in this book. No reproducibles.More suitable for linguistics than vocabulary for the classroom.
If you are intersted in word origins this book is good for creative ways to study word origins.
