There's so much rubbish written about Nabokov (mainly from people who went to one of his lectures once, to be fair) that this is an incredible relief. I shouldn't have to be giving this sort of compliment, but it's great to read someone who knows the difference between criticism and biography, who can think, and who hasn't been fooled into believing that the most rewarding way of reading Nabokov is how he told us to. Cornwell is lucid and intelligent: he can say complex things without flinching, apologising or patronising: he knows what he's talking about and he doesn't hesitate to talk about it. Thank God.
