5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal as a basic first or spare digicam, otherwise look elsewhere..., 29 May 2008
    A few additional specs first:

This cam takes 640x480 video at 24 frames/sec and 320x240 video at 30 frames/sec. Unusually for a stills cam, the movie sound is recorded in 16 bit quality (rather than 8 bit). It also has 32mb built in memory. Max stills ISO equivalent is 200. The manual states it is compatible with cards up to 4gb SDHC, but I do not have an SDHC card to test this.

I purchased it as a spare camera for the car and to use when I don't want to be carrying a pricey cam around. For these purposes it's ideal, with initial outdoor and indoor flash images being sharp and correctly exposed. Close inspection reveals a higher than average level of compression being applied to the jpeg images (FINE mode - the best available) resulting in a lack of fine detail, so if you're looking for your one and only camera it's time to look elsewhere.

The video specification is impressive for a cheap camera, but note there's no speaker on the unit itself, so although it records sound you'll only hear this when playing the file back through your PC or Mac. Again, the video compression rate is high so you'll see lots of little 16x16 pixel blocks making up the image when played back on a monitor, but this is less noticeable on a TV at normal viewing distances.

Cheap, cheerful and perfectly usable as a take-anywhere spare camera. As this is clearly the target market, it gets 5 stars from me.

    1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 3 Jun 2008
By R. P. Shoard (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I purchased this camera to replace my Canon PowerShot A40 (only 2 megapixels). Its a good job I held on to my Canon until I'd tested the Vivitar because to put it plainly, its awful. I used both cameras to take photos of the same things like, a bowl of fruit, the garden, my baby daughter. The Vivitar was a distant second on all counts. With the bowl of fruit it took 8 presses of the autofocus before it was vaguely accurate and I had placed the fruit bowl in good light. The LCD monitor is poor quality and flickers between rich and faded colouring. This camera is on offer for a reason, don't waste your money.

This camera is easy to use and great on batteries. The picture quality is very good and the colours on the pictures are brilliant. Highly recommended!
