Book Description

When Imogen and Anna unexpectedly inherit their grandmother Vivien's ice cream parlour, it turns both their lives upside-down. The Brighton shop is a seafront institution, but while it's big on charm it's critically low on customers. If the sisters don't turn things around quickly, their grandmother's legacy will disappear forever.

With summer looming, Imogen and Anna devise a plan to return Vivien's to its former glory. Rather than sell up, they will train up, and make the parlour the newest destination on the South Coast foodie map.

While Imogen watches the shop, her sister flies to Italy to attend a gourmet ice cream-making course. But as she works shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best chefs in the industry, Anna finds that romance can bloom in the most unexpected of places...

The Brighton shop is a seafront institution, but though it's big on retro charm it's critically low on customers. If the sisters don't turn things around quickly, their grandmother's legacy will disappear forever. With summer fast approaching, Imogen and Anna devise a plan. Ever since I first heard about the delicious concept for this novel (a scoop from the author herself no less) I had been looking forward to the release, and after the stunning cover was revealed last month I could not wait to get my eager hands on a copy. When it fell through my mail box I finished the book I was reading at the time at rapid speed just so I could dig into 'Vivien's Heavenly Ice Cream Shop' straight away - I wasn't disappointed.

Sisters Anna and Imogen McAvoy lead opposite lives; Imogen is a photographer and lives a bohemian lifestyle with her boyfriend in the tropical climates of Thailand, while Anna lives in Brighton and is wholly committed to her relationship with Jon, who has an adorable little son from a previous relationship, and her rising marketing career.

However, when the two young women unexpectedly inherit their grandmother Vivien's ice cream shop at the seafront in Brighton they have to decide whether they want to sell it on or if they are willing to turn their lives upside down by putting all their time and energy into returning the shop to its former glory. The title of the novel may give away which of the two options they pick!

Taking over the helm of the ice cream parlour turns out to be more difficult than Anna and Imogen initially imagined and as they encounter one disaster after another there are times they are close to giving up on their mission and selling the shop after all. Thankfully they have each other - as well as new friends in the form of fellow store-owners on the Brighton seafront - to get them through the toughest of times.

The two sisters each have their separate stories within the novel too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic summer read 8 Jun. 2013

I loved Abby Clements' first book, Meet Me Under The Mistletoe, and thought it was a lovely, heart warming Christmas read. When the follow up, Vivien's Heavenly Ice Cream Shop, was announced, I couldn't wait to, ahem, sink my teeth into it. The glorious cover (which almost rivals the cover for Meet Me Under The Mistletoe) caught my eye and I knew I was in for a summery treat.

Both Imogen and Anna are dealing with their own issues in life, trying to navigate their way through careers, countries and their 20s when their beloved grandmother Vivien passes away. The sisters, who couldn't be more different from one another, are shocked to discover that Vivien has left her ice cream parlour to them in her will, along with a little dog! For Anna, it signals an opportunity to flex her foodie fingers and get in touch with her lifelong dreams. Imogen, however, finds herself having to leave behind her glorious beach and sun soaked life in Thailand to help her sister renovate and relaunch the shop.

Naturally, there are several setbacks along the way for both of the sisters, both personally and professionally, but they rally together in a way that only sisters can. Their contrasting characters were written really well and provided each sister with their own unique voice. But, the sisterhood aside, my favourite chapters are the ones that took place in Florence, where Anna attends an ice cream course. The settings, sights and sounds were written so gloriously that I felt as though I had been transported to the beautiful piazzas myself!

As a nice treat, there are five ice cream recipes tucked away at the back of the book for you to try out and they sound delicious. It's a nice touch considering I worked my way through several cones whilst reading this!

Overall, it's a delightful, fantastic summer read and I, personally, cannot wait to see what's next from Abby Clements!

As soon as I heard the title of the new Abby Clements new book I knew this was going to be my kind of read. I love books that take place in shops such as Meet Me at the Cupcake Café and Rosie Hopkins Sweetshop of Dreams so I was sure this was going to be a similar kind of read. If the delicious title isn't enough t in you over then just look at the cover it is stunning and is easily my favourite cover of the year, I am sure it will be impossible for any chick lit fans to walk past this book in the shop!

The last thing sisters Anna and Imogen expected at the reading of their grandma Vivian's will was to be left her ice cream shop. Anna has just moved into her first hme which she has saved hard for for years and worked herself to the bone. Imogen is living her dream taking underwater pictures abroad, so running the run down family business was not on the girls to do list. Will the girls be able to forfill their grandma's wishes or will their original dreams stand in the way?

This was a delightful, feel good read. It was everything I was hoping for and more. The characters were wonderfully well written. I loved both our main characters, Imogen was an exciting character, a real dreamer who like an adventure which is completely different to her older sister Anna who felt like a more grounded and homily character but who is also very ambitious so as you can imagine both girls brought something a little different to the book.

I loved how the storyline centered around the ice cream shop the whole way through, it was great to see the highs and the lows in getting the shop back up and running again. The story goes more in-depth in the running and the start up of the shop than I have found with other similar books and this was something I really enjoyed.
