“Maier, a nanny with a photography obsession and secretive tendencies, has an astonishing story. But it’s her quiet yet piercing images that resonate most.” (O, the Oprah Magazine)

“...the largest collection of her work to date.” (New Republic)

“Maier, a nanny with a photography obsession and secretive tendencies, has an astonishing story. But it’s her quiet yet piercing images that resonate most.” (O magazine)

“This dense new book of previously unseen photos (discovered after her death) makes a thoughtful gift for an aspiring photographer, or any fan of Garry Winogrand.” (New York magazine)

From the Back Cover

The largest and most comprehensive selection of the work of American street photographer Vivian Maier

Photographer Vivian Maier's allure can be explained by the mystery that surrounds both her life and her work. The story of Maier—the secretive nanny-photographer who became a popular sensation shortly after her death—has only been pieced together from a small selection of the images she made and the handful of facts that have surfaced about her life. Vivian Maier: A Photographer Found is the largest and most in-depth collection of Maier's photographs to date, including her color images.

With lively text by noted photography curator and writer Marvin Heiferman, this definitive volume explores and celebrates Maier's work and life from a contemporary and nuanced perspective, analyzing her pictures within the pantheon of American street photography. With more than 235 full-color and black-and-white photographs, most of which have never been published in book form, this collection also includes images of Maier's personal artifacts and memorabilia that have never been seen before. The text draws upon recently conducted interviews with people who knew Maier, which shed new light on her surprising photographic accomplishments and life.

Vivian Maier: A Photographer Found is a striking, revelatory volume that unlocks the door to the room of a very private artist who made an extraordinary number of images, chose to show them to no one, and, as fate would have it, succeeded brilliantly in fulfilling what remains so many people's secret or unrealized desire: to live in and see the world creatively.

With more than 235 full-color and black-and-white photographs

I have had this book on order since it was first announced and have very much been looking forward to its publication and arrival. However, having got it I am now somewhat disappointed. Unlike some reviews I am satisfied with the quality of the printing and the introduction is very good, particularly if you are unfamiliar with a lot of the background behind Vivian Maier. My disappointment lies with the content, both what is in this volume and what isn't. For a start, there is a lot of repetition of photographs already published by Maloof of Maier's work. Indeed, if you have Street Photographer and Self Portrait then you already have a considerable amount of what is published here. Which leads to the obvious question of why publish it again? If, as we know, Maier left such a huge collection of work, why is it necessary in this volume to publish what has already gone before and why so little new material? Equally, we are told that Maier travelled outside the USA an number of times in the 1950's yet none of this work, including her earlier travels to France are included. It's as if Maloof has decided that Vivian Maier is a street photographer and he has produced this book to prove it. But the narrative also argues that she is more than that in which case, where is the evidence? I do believe there is a real opportunity to showcase much of Maier's wide range of work, the street photographer and self portraits have already been done, but the broader picture is lost here. If this is the first Maier book you buy then you will be getting a wide section of her American work and an excellent book. If you already have other books then you'll be getting variations on themes you've already seen albeit that she remains an outstanding photographer.

Reason for my three stars is simply that, as mentioned in another review, many of her pictures have already been published in other books covering Vivian Maier's life as a photographer. I can only asume that the reason is that Maloof plan to publish more books of her works. In other words - making more money on her works. Nothing wrong with that but you risk loosing interest in her books by not being more broad in publishing her works.

This collection of Vivian Maier's photographs is superb - they are laid out well in what is a large, good quality and heavy book. Rather than rushing through it, I treated myself to just 3 or 4 images a day to really appreciate her skill and eye.
I do wonder why Maloof felt the need to repeat some of the pictures from his other books on Maier, especially as there is such an immense body of her work to choose from - I suspect he released this as the companion volume to his film "Finding Vivian Maier" and wanted to include her most well known photographs - but it's a shame if you already have the other books. I haven't marked my review down though, as this is, I feel, now the book to start with if you are looking for an introduction to Vivian Maier, and the images and her story are so compelling I can't give any less than 5 stars.

Maier certainly had a great eye. This book cannot fail to inspire. Probably pointless waiting for a definitive book of her works due to ownership of prints and over 100000 apparently. This book contains many familiar prints and has more than enough to give inspiration. The quality and feel is very good and just enough about her to keep you intrigued. Why didn't she cash her tax refund cheques?
