It is a few years since I read this book but I can still feel its atmosphere. This is a haunting and wonderful story and it can transport you to another world. I bought 2 further Tanith Lee books on the strength of it.

This is not Tanith at her best. It starts off really well - what with the dead horse in the wedding bed, the flies, and all -- but soon pitters out into a long (seemingly) tedious string of uninteresting events.
