This is a fantastic box. It comprises the ten volumes (11 CDs in all) of Vivaldi's complete sacred music recorded by The King's Consort between 1994 and 2003. The music itself is fabulous; in my view it is in these works especially that Vivaldi's greatness shines most brightly. It has wonderful variety from the beautiful and solemn to the joyfully vigorous, and Vivaldi's gift for melody and harmonic creativity runs through every piece.
The performances are unfailingly excellent. The discs are littered with star soloists - James Bowman, Robin Blaze, Catherine Denley, Michael George, Sarah Connolly, Joyce Didonato... the list goes on and on and they give the excellent performances one would expect. The instrumentalists and chorus are equally good and the whole thing is beautifully judged, with real weight and gravitas when needed and a delightful suppleness and spring in the step for the livelier parts.
As with any large set, there will be parts which you like more than others (I've never been crazy about Juditha Triumphans, for example) and, like me, you may already have favourite versions of some of these works. These certainly won't depose people like Emma Kirkby and Andreas Scholl in my affections but they are top quality performances and there is also stuff here which I've never come across elsewhere, all of it excellent, and you simply can't go wrong with this box.
In short this is a magnificent set. It is quite an investment, but it will give you a lifetime of pleasure and I recommend it very warmly.
