***** Performance ***** Recording L Estravagante is the latest in a line of elite ensembles to emerge on the Italian early music scene ... passion positively smoulders throughout these performances ... this is some of the most fiery, spontaneous, unashamedly expressive and brilliantly excessive Vivaldi-playing on CD ... Bravissimi! --BBC Music Magazine October 2012 CHAMBER CHOICE OF THE MONTH

CD Description

In 1705, Giuseppe Sala published in Venice the Suonote do camera a tre, due violini o violone o cembalo op.1 of Antonio Vivaldi. This set of trio sonatas marked the official 'debut' of a composer who was already more than a mere youth (the 'Prete Rosso' was then 27-years old), and probably contains the earliest works of his that have come down to us. It is very likely, though, as Michael Talbot has pointed out, that the copy of 1705 is in fact a reprint of a now lost first edition published in 1703. However that may be, this collection dedicated to the Brescian nobleman Count Annibale Gambara displays a balance - at times, inevitably, somewhat precarious - between reference to codified formulas and models, on the one hand, and the definition of an original expressive voice on the other. In terms of scoring, his Op.1 adopts the recently created Italian format of the trio sonata, the output of which was dominated by the Arcadian reform of Arcangelo Corelli: even in Venice, where a renowned instrumental tradition already existed, Corelli's Opp.1-4 enjoyed almost immediate diffusion and were reprinted by the aforementioned Sala just a few years after the Roman first editions (in 1684, 1686, 1691 and 1695 respectively).

5.0 out of 5 stars Estravagantly beautiful Opus 1 22 May 2012
Format:Audio CD
Finally! A superb recording of Antonio Vivaldi's Opus 1! The Roman classical trio sonata was still a fresh and "new" form when Vivaldi published his first opus in 1705 (or in 1703 some would have it). Vivaldi, strong minded and genial even in his mid twenties, did however stray from the Roman form, headed by Corelli's examples, and created a wholly new way of writing for the two violin and Basso continuo, owing a great deal to the Venetian concerto. We should bear in mind that the triosonata was gaining ground as perhaps THE most prestigious form a European composer (except for the French) could compose within.

This is fantastic playing from top-musicians of ensembles such as Accademia Bizzantina and Venice Baroque Orchestra. There is a fresh approach to the works here that certainly do Vivaldi's debut as composer justice. Vivaldi's Follia variations in D minor are the best known work here, and the violinist Stefano Montanari and Stefano Rossi are very impressive right from the start. The BC is balanced with a both discerning and energetic use of violoncello, harpsichord, organ, guitar and "tiorba".

I have a little criticism though. There should have been a clear marking of which sonatas that are included on the CD. The sonatas that are played on the CD are nos. 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, thus omitting sonatas nos. 2, 5, 6.

This CD sets Vivaldi's trios in a new light for me, at least, and I strongly feel that this adds to the image of the young Vivaldi. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Vivaldi 3 Jun 2012
By Sid Nuncius HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is an absolutely terrific disc of most of Vivaldi's Op.1 trio Sonatas including the famous Variations on La Folia. The quality of the music and the brilliant playing by members of some of Europe's finest Baroque Ensembles makes his something really special. I would rate it as highly as the Purcell Quartet's fantastic recording of some of these pieces on Hyperion Vivaldi: La Folia, which is very high praise indeed.

These Trio Sonatas show what a very fine composer Vivaldi really was. For me, Vivaldi's chamber music and choral music are the real gems of his output and these form prime examples of his genius. They are inventive and full of melody and harmonic invention and certainly give the lie to those who maintain that Vivaldi was bland and repetitive, and are done full justice here by fabulous musicianship. There is depth, verve and tenderness as appropriate and it is a huge pleasure to hear Vivaldi played as though he really meant something. The instrumentalists are all first-rate and have the technique and skill to make the often virtuosic music sound completely natural. They plainly love the music and enjoy playing it together which gives the whole thing and infectious excitement and charm. The variety of continuo instruments used, including theorbo, guitar, harpsichord and organ, make the disc sufficiently varied in sound that you can play it all the way through without it ever sounding samey, and the recorded sound is excellent.

In short, this is an absolute cracker of a disc. Personally, I hate the covers of this Naïve Vivaldi series but even if you share my view, please don't let that put you off. What is inside the cover is simply terrific and very warmly recommended.

This is one of the best Vivaldi discs that I've heard since the end of last year. First-class music making; delightful music and audiophile standard sound quality. What more would any lover of Vivaldi want? Highly recommended.
