This recording contains a lively rendition of the four seasons on period instruments by Rinaldo Alessandrini and the Concerto Italiano. However, the real pleasure is in the "bonus" disc, which contains gems by baroque composers, such as Marenzio and Monteverdi, who may be unfamiliar to many Vivaldi fans (e.g., yours truly). The bonus sampler does exactly the job it is meant to: it virtually forces you to buy recordings of the works sampled.
Great value, great performances, and educational. How many more justifications do you need to splash out and buy it?

This very well recorded double disc is priced as a single disc so the second disc of samples is, in effect, a free extra. As none of the pieces included on it are complete, I would suggest that it is viewed simply as an enjoyable extra but the main interest must be the Four Seasons.

This is a very over-crowded market, even among the recent Italian groups,so any recording has to offer something special. This disc does exactly that in so far as the whole set is directed by Alessandrini from the harpsichord. This gives him a controlling vantage point, especially over tempo, and the result is significant. Another feature of this set is the use of different soloists from the 'orchestra' to take the solo violin roles.

As a result there is a difference of balance to the regular here. The main body of the orchestra is relatively stronger than the role of the soloists so there is more a a shared feeling of corporate music making as opposed to music making led and dominated by 'a' soloist. The Slow movements and slow sections are frequently mesmerisingly slow with the faster sections being performed at more normal but crisp speeds. This adjusted balance between fast and slow is very effective and increases the range of tension within the music. The emotional range is also significantly greater.

I would suggest that this is a very thought provoking and intensely effective version of these concertos and, as such, they deserve some serious consideration among collectors. Collectors of multiple version will be very rewarded and those looking for a good'only' version are unlikely to feel disappointed.

'The four seasons' is an all time classic..but in my opinion somehow spoiled by the the first executions by 'I Musici'..more on the romantic-turistic side than on the fifologic one.
Alessandrini rediscovers the sound of original instruments and the brilliant tones of the baroque orchestra: you discover with him an almost entirely new Vivaldi..and what a great one!
