Format: Audio CD
This whole four-volume series of Vivaldi cello concerti is uniformly excellent. Vivaldi's writing in the cello concerti is less about the virtuosic fireworks of many of the violin concerti and, while no less demanding on the soloist, seems to me to be more like that in his vocal and choral works. There is plenty of excitement, but also a more melodic and contemplative feel in many places with the slow movements in particular often being very affecting. They are lovely, varied works which are the product of a real master and which give the lie to the jibe about Vivaldi having written the same concerto five hundred times. Full of harmonic and melodic invention, they are, I think, genuinely the work of a great composer.

Raphael Wallfisch, Nicholas Kraemer and the City of London Sinfonia play them superbly. There is a lightness and spring in their step where appropriate and a more intense, almost spiritual feel in places. Wallfisch is a terrific cellist and there is a fine understanding between soloist, conductor and orchestra. With excellent recorded sound by Naxos these are all-round excellent discs and at Naxos's budget price an unmissable bargain. Very warmly recommended.

Vivaldi is is an often played composer but we rarely hear his cello concertos which is such a shame. The deep tones of the cello and the beautiful lilting excerpts are a delight

I inserted the CD into a computer and the music came out! Seems to be a decent recording, though not as exhilarating as a live orchestra, but certainly a lot cheaper!

Superb Volume of Vivaldi Cello Concertos 24 Mar 2007
By JohnL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is Volume 3 in a set of four excellent discs of Vivaldi's fine Cello Concerti. All four of these CDs are very good indeed, but arguably this one is the best of the bunch. The soloist is Raphael Wallfisch, who consistently plays very well. The City of London Sinfonia led by Nicholas Kraemer, is a wonderful partner to the soloist. The Concerto in D minor (RV 407) is one of Vivaldi's most inspired works, performed quite nicely on this recording. Also, the cello is joined by bassoon for good effect in the Concerto in E minor (RV 409). The sound quality is absolutely first rate. The Penguin Guide enthusiastically recommends all four of these Cello Concerti volumes, but reserves their highest praise to this Volume 3, awarding it their coveted "Rosette". Without a doubt, you will not be disappointed in the slightest if you purchase this disc. Any lover of Vivaldi is sure to be satisfied, and the price is easy on the budget. In case the reader is not aware by now, many a Naxos recording has been highly praised by an abundant number of respected critics. This reviewer is just one of many buyers of their CDs that can wholeheartedly agree with them.

Marvelous Vivaldi Music 5 Jan 2011
By John from LA - Published on Amazon.com

I purchased this CD plus the other three that comprise the complete cello concerti of Vivaldi in this set produced by Naxos. The concerts themselves are magnificent and the sound quality, energy and clarity of the CD's are superb. I cannot recommend these CD's enough, especially if you like Baroque music and are already familiar with the music of Vivaldi. If you are not already familiar, these CD's will give you a beautiful introduction.

Amazing! Something that involve your mind. I have been listening the four seasons as the reference to this composer but all those concertos are as beautiful as that one.

very well done! 31 Jan 2013

I have the same review for all the CD's in this series of Vivaldi's Cello concertos, recorded by the London Sinfonia and featuring Wallfisch on cello. The performances are really very good--the music is energetic and alive. The recording quality is also pretty good--not quite up to audiophile standards, but the recording does have reasonable stereo imaging and certainly captures instrumental timbre well. This recording doesn't quite allow a good system to bring the musicians into your home but it is impressive nonetheless--certainly above average. I listen to these CD's a lot and love them.
