Product Description

Product Description

This new release in Naïve's acclaimed Vivaldi Edition is dedicated to forgotten opera arias. Some of these arias were lost in the 18th century and have been found in manuscripts from Vivaldi's personal collection held in Turin. This includes two arias from Scanderbeg, an opera composed by Vivaldi in 1718. The opera itself has been lost and the pieces featured on this new CD are the only ones that remain from this work. The second part of the disc is made up of arias that are well-known but are performed here in different versions. They are taken from "Orlando furioso", "Tito Manlio" and "La Verità in Cimento". The release also includes two string concertos which feature the outstanding violinist Stefano Montanari who has himself appeared with great success on previous recordings in the Vivaldi Edition.

The Accademia Bizantina, an orchestra specialising in 17th and 18th century repertoire played on original instruments, has been directed by the harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone since 1996. In that time the group has risen to become one of the most highly regarded period orchestras today, bringing fresh energy and creativity to the interpretation of Baroque music. Contralto Sonia Prina is a highly regarded interpreter of early opera and has in recent years been Clarice in Rossini's La pietra di paragone at the Théâtre du Châtelet, and performed the title role in Handel's Rinaldo at La Scala Milan under the direction of Ottavio Dantone.

Personnel:
Accademia Bizantina, Ottavio Dantone (director), Sonia Prina (contralto), Stefano Montanari (violin)

Review

There is some extraordinary music here...accomplished, thoroughly researched and imaginative...animated, brilliant performances...Prina reaffirms her status as an outstanding Baroque singer. -- Gramophone, (David Vickers), September 2008

I have liked Sonia Prina for some time now but this disc of Vivaldi rarities surely shows her at her very best. There are so many good things on here but my personal favourite is an aria from Scanderbeg (later re-used in Il Verita in Cimento) 'Con palme ed allori' which is wonderfully exciting with horn accompaniment. The orchestra play brilliantly here and Prina's coloratura dazzling and her firm, meaty mezzo voice is just sumptuous. Highly recommended.

As all the Vivaldi/Naïve vocal items, this is again very beautiful.
I have already all the Vivaldi Operas on this label through Amazon.fr.
I hope more Operas will be issued soon.
I have the impression that Amazon.uk is slightly cheaper with these Naïve productions than Amazon.fr (????)
Anyway I am very satified with Amazon either in France or the UK.

I heard Sonia Prina at the Proms this year and was immediately enthralled by her voice; this Vivaldi CD is just as good. A great find!

HASH(0x9b8dccf0) out of 5 stars Generally a nice effort 10 April 2008

Sonia Prina has one of those voices that I can't quite decide if I like or not, and her recorded performances are similar. On the whole this recording falls into the I like it category. She is best on the arias from Scanderberg and Teuzzone, especially Con Palme ed allori, although there are times her breath control is lacking and she breaks the phrase. On the whole I enjoy what she brings to these arias musically, although sometimes the drama of the aria suffers as a result--her rendition of Se vincer non si puo from La Verita in Cimento is too safe and restrained, especially given the character singing is supposed to be manipulative and calculating and willing to do almost anything to win.

While I love Prina's crisp articulation of fast passages most of the time there are moments it seems too hard-edged and too much in the throat and it verges on the ugly (and not ugly-beautiful). She also rushes a little at times. But when it's good it is, very, very good. The aria Per lacerarlo from Teuzzone displays all of this in a single 2.5 minutes! Perfection and UGH! in close proximity.

The true gem here is the accompanying ensemble, which is always good, even when Prina lapses. Every moment of the accompaniment was perfection and lives up to the quality I have come to expect from these Naive recordings. I fully expect to listen to this multiple times, even given my reservations about Prina at moments, because at the end of the day even when she bothers me she is compelling and that is all I can ask of a performer.

HASH(0x9b6c8e7c) out of 5 stars A great voice, with an amazing interpretation 16 July 2011

Sonia Prina is one of the great voices in our times. Owner of a unmatched vocal coloratura, she gives treatment and interpretation singular in her jobs. Her power of variation in Vivaldian arias are strong, giving a great versatility to the posibilities of interpretation. She can make in "arie da capo" exclusive colors, following sistematically the score in first reading, and giving to us a spettacular "variazzioni" when returns "da capo", being always consistent with the dramaticity of the text and work, of the score and of the techniques, without making use of "pyrotechnics" that surprise but don't transmit what the compositon wanna tell us. The concertos also are great, do not lose anything to the vocal parts. The album repertoire is terrific. Like musicologist, collector and unconditional admirer of Vivaldi, I recommend.

HASH(0x9b43bb58) out of 5 stars Vivaldi: Arie ritrovate (Vivaldi Edition) 17 Oct. 2011
By Bjorn Viberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Vivaldi: Arie ritrovate (Vivaldi Edition) is a 2007 Naive recording contralto Sonia Prina. Ottavio Dantone leads the Accademia Bizantina and we also hear violinist Stefano Montanari. Frederic Delemea has written a very well-written and informative essay entitled "Frescoes and miniatures". Also included are short biographies of the performers, the soloist and the conductor. Being a huge fan of Baroque music and Vivaldi this was truly a magnificent listening experience. Highly recommended indeed. 5/5.
