This is an affectionate homage to the 1960's and 70's "sexploitation" movies made by directors like Russ Meyer, Supervixens being a classic example of the genre. Barbie is a disenchanted housewife, with a Ken doll type blonde husband. Barbie seems to have an allergy to clothing, judging by the speed with which she regularly sheds her clothes. Rick walks out on her, and so she turns to her BFF Sheila for moral support. The two ladies then go on a journey of sexual discovery, experiencing lesbianism, nudist camps, the hippie scene, drugs and orgies. This is very soft core, like a (bad) Carry On Movie, only with occasional glimpses of cleavage and buttock. The actors are obviously pretending to be wooden, in the style of those Russ Meyer movies, but the difficulty is, I don't think they can act. The 70's costumes and make up are fun, the music is deliberately tacky, but what the film sorely lacks is a script that works. This film is like one of those Confessions of a Taxi Driver movies (which starred Robin Askwith), only without the humour and sense of fun. I think I can understand why this type of film was made 40 odd years ago, in the era of free love, but I don't see the point of making the same sort of movie these days, even tarted up with Austin Powers style psychedelic colours, it just smacks of a somewhat tawdry anachronism. Pity about the script, a little bit of wit could have saved this movie from being a bit of a clunker.

Just watched Viva, and I absolutely loved every minute of it! It's amazing how authentic it is to the time and genre it's paying homage to. The first thing that struck me was the vivid colours - just like watching a film actually made in the 60s. The acting is a brilliant display of how it was done in exploitation films: simple and a bit stiff with the appropriate cheekiness. The visuals in this film are stunning from beginning to end. Anna Biller is perfect as Barbi/Viva with a look that reminds me of Tura Satana! This is a must for exploitation fans. Just make sure you buy the 120-minute uncut version, not the 102-minute R-rated version.

Have you ever looked in one of those shop windows, the type that sell brightly colour toasters, wacky shaped telephones, things like that? well, that’s Viva.

It is, to put it politely, dreadful. For the most part, the whole thing feels like one long advert, where the performers have learnt their lines moments before the one and only take. The upbeat sound (electro organ sounds) matches the highly saturated picture. It’s the 70’s..

There’s nudity. Not idealistic nudity. The women are rounded, boob’s all shapes and sizes, their bushes not over trimmed. The men, short willies, not much sign of having spent much time working out (except one of the characters).

It is really well done, & feels like one of those movies but also like valley of the dolls too. You have to enter into the spirit of the thing you can't just say it's bad when that is intentional. The period details are amazing.

If you're a fan of sexploitation films from the 1960's, Viva is perfect for you! A throwback to these films in a similar way to Death Proof/Planet Terror, Hobo With A Shotgun and Black Dynamite but with a strong focus on the cheeky sex films of the time.

If you're a fan of films from directors such as Russ Meyer (particularly SuperVixens), sexploitation and throwback movies then you should definetly check this one out. It recieved some fantastic reviews from critics upon it's release and I totally agree with it. A great fun film that pays homage to the rather cheeky films of the 60s.
