Book Description

24 Feb 2010 1846193176 978-1846193170 1st New edition
This is the first revision book to be published specifically for candidates sitting the FRCS(Urol) examination. It presents a selection of questions arising from common clinical scenarios along with detailed model answers. The emphasis is on current concepts and topics asked in the exam. Each chapter has been written by senior urology trainees who have recently passed the examination, in conjunction with experienced consultant urological surgeons. In addition to FRCS(Urol) examination candidates, this book will also be relevant to those sitting the FEBU or MSc urology examination, or to established consultants seeking a useful refresher text in areas outside their subspecialist interest. 'The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) is a charity whose mission is to promote the highest standard in the practice of Urology. As President of BAUS, it is therefore a great privilege and pleasure to introduce this excellent book.' - from the Foreword by Derek Fawcett 'No Urology trainee should be without this important and valuable contribution to the training of future consultants.' - from the Foreword by Hashim U Ahmed

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, everyone should have this 13 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
Just passed my FRCS (Urol) and this was by far the best book I used. By the end, it was the only book I used. Gives concise details on all the major topics for the exam and most importantly, give the relevant references and figures which can be quoted in the viva. Importantly, this is not only useful for the viva, it also probably has the vast majority of data needed for the MCQs as well so should be bought early.

What I found very useful was to summarise all of the chapters into the viva topics and to leave gaps for extra details which you can pick up from journals and the revision course. This book, combined with the EAU guidelines, probably has enough between them to comfortably pass both sections of the exam.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from Urology News Jul/Aug 2010 30 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
At last - the hole is filled! After almost countless years since the birth of the FRCS(Urol) we now have a text worthy of universal purchase. In fact I would imagine that, despite the relative rapidity of this review publication, most people are already aware, if not in possession, of this book. Certainly, at the most recent sitting of the FRCS(Urol) in Edinburgh last month, virtually every candidate (and a significant number of examiners!) seemed to be pouring over various chapters throughout the day, no doubt in a fashion reflective of their own personal viva timetable. With five editors and 29 contributors, including three Medal winners, this book's pedigree shouts for itself - it even allows the reader to forgive the fact that some contributors are not even in possession of the FRCS(Urol). Within the 420 pages of gold dust there are 15 chapters and, as one would expect, each addresses a particular pathology beginning with prostate cancer continuing through other oncological entities, emergency urology (two chapters), infection, female urology, BPH and even technology. In essence, every station for the exam is covered - except transplantation! The book, which is of a size that fits firmly into the hand whilst still allowing the mildly myopic a fighting chance, was probably designed to be the sort of thing that would shorten a standing tube journey for the reader whilst increasing it for the `over the shoulder peeper'. It takes the form of a series of questions (in bold), each of which could easily crop up in the exam. A perfect evidence-based answer is then offered and at the end of each chapter relevant references are given, although these are not cited in the main text. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have book for FRCS (Urol) exam! 10 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having put my back in to it for well over a year, this book has helped me though all the thicks & thins for preparing for the exam. Agreed, some topics are not well covered, but it's meant to be a revision book for the vivas. It is not very representative of the actual viva scenarios as the exam is very clinical but the depth in which the topics are covered ensures that one is well prepared for it. The technology section could do with a bit of expanding but it is also a topic which is limitless as to what questions can get asked.

I like the format of the book - it lends itself to a good read. Used as a companion book from the start of exam preparation, it will soon grow on you, especially as you start making notes & adding them/sticking them.

Some of the stuff is outdated - use it as an inspiration to look it up & update it - brilliant way of revising for the exam!
All-in-all, a must-have book for the FRCS (Urol) exam!
