My first outing with Mister Connolly, I come to it via the enigma "Judas Pig" and now I ask myself why has it taken me so long. Viva La Madness is a fine addition to the crime fiction genre, a great story and characters, and it rocks along at a pace. It uses a lot of the same slang as Judas Pig, which is intriging and shares that novels ease with its subject matter.
I will now dig out Layer Cake and see what that has to offer.

It has taken a long time coming but it's been worth the wait. Fans of Layer Cake will not be disappointed by this slick, clever sequel. It has all of Connolly's trademark deft twists of plot and brilliant characterisation and in places is comedy gold. The gangster genre can be tired and derivative but in Connolly's hands it becomes a gripping rollercoaster. Unlike a lot of authors who jumped on the bandwagon, you get the feeling that Connolly really knows these people and what he's at. It is authentic and at times chilling. Utterly fantastic.

Another classic offering from JJ Connelly, which goes to show when this genre is done well it makes for a first class read. Strong characters and a plot that zips along deliver a compulsive read. I enjoyed Layer Cake but there's a substance to Viva La Madness that stregthens the mental imagary and makes it difficult to put down.
Waiting for the film release - it's going to be a sure-fire hit!

Compelling and fun
Viva starts quite slow, with what seems like some well worn cliches but, by the middle third, is purely compulsive reading. I found it hard to put down. Read more
