Product Description

A documentary about the man who brought us all out of the 'Celluloid Closet', Vito Russo changed the face of queer film theory forever. Now, director, Jeffrey Schwarz looks back at the man and the ways in which LGBT representation has changed over time.

In the aftermath of Stonewall, a newly politicised Vito Russo found his voice as a gay activist and critic of LGBT representation in the media. This documentary is about his life as an activist, an academic and a cinephile.

Over ONE HOUR of bonus material, 'Our Time' Original TV Series Clips, Interview Out-takes

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting documentary on a key figure 6 April 2013
By schumann_bg TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Vito Russo was one of the key figures who helped bring gay rights to the fore and later campaigned for AIDS awareness and funding for research. He started out from the best departure point - that of a young man full of gay feeling who never doubted the naturalness of his desires, and was uncomplicated in his attitude until it conflicted with social prejudice. He emerges in this excellent film as a very likeable man who also happened to have a media-friendly face, which led him to present the first gay television series called Our Time, excerpts of which are included here as extras. They are quite fascinating, as much as the film itself really, with some really brilliant early voices in gay liberation who were completely unknown to me - the founder of the Mattachine Society, for instance, a man called Harry Hay, and a woman called Barbara Gittings (founder of the wonderfully named "Daughters Of Bilitis") make the most inspiring interviewees, as does Harvey Fierstein. To see these people and Vito together would lead any reasonable person to think that gay people embody a kind of human ideal, they are so balanced and feeling and lacking in some of the more irritating gender-stereotyped traits! They also make me think ruefully of how these standards of civility and articulacy have declined now - who could be taken as a representative voice of gay consciousness today? Where is the gay press that does more than represent the values of celebrity and commerce?

Russo's activist life spanned two decades, of which the first might be seen as more fighting for an ideal of gay life, and the second more a response to the catastrophe of AIDS and the further injustices this brought on gay people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Viva Vito 3 July 2014

Very important film. Those who died first from AIDS are almost forgotten history, and we must not forget the stories of the people who founded ACT-UP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Documentary 5 Mar 2014
By Petrus
Format:DVD
Powerful documentary about Vito Russo' heroic fight for gay rights and HIV/AIDS awareness. Several moving interviews with Vito himself as well as with friends and family. Leaves one with a sense of awe and gratitude for what Vito and company achieved for the LGBT community and the world in general. A big thanks to them all!
