We used these cups from about 6 months old and still do at 22 months, but now looking for an alternative. Generally speaking they are great, we wouldn't have used them for so long otherwise, however a few downsides:

whilst they can be sterilised, daily microwave sterilisation cause plastic valve to deteriorate quickly (manufacturer did replace free of charge). Repeated cold water sterilisation seems to cause the straw to shrink a tiny bit meaning a poor fit that makes it is very difficult to suck up fluid. Not a problem once we stopped sterilising.

They can sometimes be a little temperamental if the straw is not fitting very tightly, they are difficult to use, probably fine for a toddler who can tell there is a problem, not so great for a 6 month old.

Compared to other straw cups the flow is quite slow, this may be a good or bad thing?

The plastic strap on the value is fragile, although you can buy replacement valves it is an additional cost if you are using regularly.

Issue now is our toddler biting through the soft straw part (nice texture to teeth on!) and we are unable to buy new lids. So we are buying new cups each time :-(.

I would highly recommend a straw cup (of any type) for a baby with GERD. Upright drinking helped considerably, and this cup was the only one of many bottles, sippy and straw cups we tried that worked for us.

Too hard to suck 16 Mar 2012
By mamama
This cups works, is easy to take apart, clean and put back together. BUT it takes a monumental effort to suck even a small amount of liquid out. My baby just loses patience. I got my six year old to test it and his verdict is that it is too hard to suck.

After my 2 year old chewed his way through all the tops of his Tommee Tippee Explora beakers I thought it might be time for a change. I was looking for a new cup for his morning and evening milk and decided I wanted a straw cup so he could hold it upright and still see the book I was reading at the same time. This cup seemed to fit the bill perfectly and I bought two. Unfortunately these cups seem to require a lot stronger 'sucking action' than the Tommee Tippee ones so the transfer has been a bit of a disaster. I have taken the valve thing out now and will have to use them later as a free flow cup without the straw when he is a bit older and has stopped tipping cups upside down as part of his ongoing liquid experiments. I have now bought some more of the Tommee Tippee Explora Easy Drink beakers. A lesson for me in "if it ain't broke don't fix it" this time.

So in summary these straw cups might be OK if you use them from the start and your baby is used to sucking quite hard. It is also fantastic to find straw cups that you can take apart to sterilise for milk drinks as they certainly didn't exist when my 7 year old was a baby. BUT if you think the transition from a teat bottle might be hard or you are switching brands then just buy one first to check that your child is prepared to suck a bit harder to get the liquid out.
