Product Description

Released in June 2008, Vita Audio's R4 has quickly become recognised as one of the finest music systems available, winning numerous accolades and being admired as much for its beautiful design as its outstanding sound quality. We are now delighted to announce the latest incarnation of this iconic design, R4i, which we believe has made R4 an even more accomplished and rounded performer thanks to a host of technical improvements. To celebrate this latest model in May we are launching a Limited Edition R4i, finished in a striking Sparkling Graphite high gloss lacquer with silver hue grilles. Moreover, all R4 models are now being manufactured to R4i specification and come in Rich Walnut real wood veneer, high gloss Midnight Black and Dream White finishes. R4i incorporates a superior FM/DAB/DAB+ receiver with greater sensitivity on all bands together with the ability to receive higher definition DAB+ transmissions, which we believe will ultimately become the standard for terrestrial digital radio transmissions around the globe. Revised audio circuitry optimisation gives greater audio clarity and a new CD suspension arrangement provides improved tracking and shock resistance. These changes bring greater sound resolution and a sound-stage that belies the R4i's compact dimensions. Finally we've redesigned and upgraded R4i's power supply so it meets and exceeds forthcoming EU standby regulations. Carefully crafted inside as well as out, R4i uses Vita Audio's hi-fi pedigree to produce stunning room-filling sound. Comprising a multi format CD player, iPod dock, USB playback port, DAB, DAB+ and FM tuner and auxiliary inputs combined to a powerful 80W audiophile-grade amplifier and speaker system, the Vita Audio R4 is the perfect sound system for stylish homes. At Vita Audio we engineer and design every aspect of our products here in the UK to create what we believe are the best small audio products money can buy!

Stunning product 2 Aug 2011
I had been looking for a high-end DAB Radio / CD Player / iPod player for a while, and it proved to be surprisingly difficult. Neither Denon, B&W, nor Bose had a product in their range that included all three functions.

Eventually I settled on the Vita Audio R4i in Limited Edition Graphite. I have now had the product a week, and I am blown away by it. This is definitely a product that someone has taken great pride in designing.

The sound is awesome - rich, earthy bass with crystal clear treble, and you can really crank the volume up without any distortion. The build quality is rock solid and the overall appearance is super-stylish. I have read other reviews about there being a problem with the CD loader, but this is something that has obviously been fixed because again, the mechanism seemed rock solid.

There are a couple of little things that could be improved: The (round) remote control doesn't charge when placed back on the unit, the iPod dock cover is a little cheap, and because the remote control is round you have to orientate it whenever you pick it up, and it is easy to block the beam. I also found the range of the remote control wasn't too hot unless you were in front of the unit. Also, you have to have your iPod in 'Airplane Mode' during use to prevent interference which seems a bit like a schoolboy error.

However, don't let the downsides put you off - this really is a superior, high-end product, and well worth the price tag.

Grows on you 19 Nov 2011
We had difficulty setting up this product when new. The aerial was difficult to attach, the CD difficult to eject and the remote control had conflicting instructions for getting the correct polarity for the batteries The instructions were not very helpful and we could raise no reply from the manufacturer's helpline on a Saturday afternoon.

These teething troubles were frustrating because the Vita Audio R4 turned out to have great sound and the graphite finish looks fabulous. It is easy to use and fun and would have got five stars without the set-up problems. We bought it to replace a Bose system which, for the same functionality of DAB and iPod dock, came as a three-box set-up, linked by wires which looked horrible. Check you have space for it before you buy the Vita. The unit is quite big.
