Product Description

Product Description

The process of visual communication runs throughout our daily lives, whether its as simple as a traffic light or as complex as sign language. Many people find learning the underlying principles of visual communication a very personal venture, though most graphic design and illustration teaching methods focus only on technical facility, ignoring the need for personal and innovative thought in visual communication. This text proposes that the repertoire of principles and techniques needed for effective visual communication cannot simply be taught, but must be developed through hands-on experience with broad-ranging visual problems. To this end, the book presents 19 challenging visual problem assignments and over 1000 pieces of solution art executed by the Wildes' students. Each problem shows the actual assignment sheet given to the students, along with detailed analysis of the problem's underlying intent and special notes that will be of particular interest to instructors. Specific design principles that are reinforced include framal references, negative-positive relationships and cropping techniques. The results give an idea of the solutions that can be achieved with this teaching approach.

Lateral Thinking 16 Feb 2004
Format:Paperback
When you first start out in design or art it can be quite difficult to know where to begin. Visual Literacy is a great way to kick it all off. Essentially it's a series individual exercises. Each exercise is designed to tackle various visual problems set around certain constraints such as, the use of negative space, using type to communicate or expressing sound through a visual means. Some of the exercises can get quite hard (talented individuals may find this not the case) but there are a host of examples to inspire and help. There seem to be know right or wrong answers just good or bad ones. I suppose the book encourages you to explore different ideas and engage in lateral thinking.

Stop Searching: Visual Literacy is It. 22 Mar 2000
By Gary Moore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I am launching a high school commercial art program in the fall of 2000 and, while doing research, stumbled upon "Visual Literacy." It stopped me dead in my tracks; the quest for a concise source of design principals, assignments, and assessments was over. I kept telling myself that it was too good to be true, you simply cannot find a resource that is so complete, comprehensible, and engaging. I chalked it up as a fluke and proceeded to continue my research. To resume the search was a waste of time, Visual Literacy was the total package. Two thumbs way up.

Fascinating 24 Jan 2000
By Javier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I think this book is an extraordinary source for designers to expand not only the way they work but the way they find new and different solutions for problems.
Richard Wilde, takes you in to exciting exercises and techniques to free your potential, to relax and look for deeply introspectation, motivating your imagination to go beyond cliches.
The best way to describe this book will be quoting Albert Einstein: Imagination is more important than knowledge, knowledge is limited, imagination encircles the world.

It's a nice book in concept 19 May 2005
By C. Pacheco - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Yes, it has some good exercises for students. However, it was not what I expected because they did not really explain concepts and graphic principles along the way. Also, it would have been better to label this a guidebook and for it to be spiral-bounded to add to its ease of use.

It only has a few exercises that are really good for a college-level class (a visual communications class).
