A disappointing useless glossy no-no,
By
This review is from: The Visual Dictionary of Illustration (Paperback)
I'm a bit put out because the book looks to be nicely presented with by all accounts beautiful illustrations (as there should be in a book about illustration) relevant to each term defined, 'slick' the 5 star reviewer called it. But, it's full of useless info anyone with an interest or background in this field really would be able to recite with eyes closed. It's not for those trained in this area because it's so basic. It's a novices book maybe a numpty's book. It didn't tell me anything i didn't already know and I was mightily disappointed after buying it based on the 5 star review. Not be doing that again, obviously a persons judgement of whats slick can vary tremendously! I really couldn't bear having wasted 10 quid on something so useless (be that nicely presented glossy useless) so I sent it back for a refund : / For an idea why it aggrevated me, of the 271 (50 to 100 word short) definitions, the useless definitions far out weighed the usefelish ones, which in themselves seem to relate generally to the art scene as a whole rather than specifically illustration and some quite random ones and also alot refer to specific arts movements like Art Deco, Art Nouveaux, Cubism, Renaissance....It contains such definitions as: doodle. Who in their right mind does not know what a doodle is?!!! felt tip pens, Hieroglyphics, graffiti, murals, printmaking, textiles, photocopier(!) Sorry but if i didn't know what some of these things were i'd hang my head or at least research on the internet rather than buy a book with a strange collection of random definitions. I look past the gloss and am not won over by packaging that surpasses content.

A Dictionary with a Twist!,
By
This review is from: The Visual Dictionary of Illustration (Paperback)
Essentially this is an A-Z of illustration terms with a twist. The illustrated element of the dictionary is a real bonus. The format is excellent, with each inclusion linked to other relevant terms in the dictionary. The illustrations are relevant and the content concise and accurate. It is incredible how much is fitted into such a compact size. The size means it's great for carrying around, and it is a great price too. It hardly seems surprising to use illustrations in a dictionary of illustration, but it is impressive just how slick this dictionary is.
