Product Description

Synopsis

Windows 98 is the culmination of many improvements to what is now a fully-fledged, 32-bit, COM-based operating system. With suitable instruction, you can push the Windows shell to performing complex actions, and customize it using C++/ATL programs. Until now, the documentation for Windows shell programming has been poor. This book is about telling you exactly how to use the tools available, and when each tool is appropriate. There's coverage of the Windows API, the Windows Scripting Host, and shell and namespace extensions that use ATL and the shell's COM object model. Information on these topics at this level has been scarce, but the author brings them all together in this volume. n/a

5.0 out of 5 stars good book with good online sorce code, 3 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual C++ Windows Shell Programming (Paperback)
This book is very good at giving you access to windows like you had in the old days with DOS. The source code is online at the publishers web page and it works. Good for people that need there programes to work as part of windows, not in windows. Also the book works well on any windows complier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to learn how to control Windows, 12 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Visual C++ Windows Shell Programming (Paperback)
This book is for visual C++, NO ITS NOT ! I program with Borland C++ Builder and I found this book more useful than the msdn online help! This will give better examples, explained in full, even with niffty diagrams that clarify everything ! You will learn many things, about the tasbkbar, the tray, desktop, explorer, registery, formating, copying, deleteing everything the way windows does it !!! If you have ever wondered how to do what windows does, or how to change/modify it. Then buy this book !

4.0 out of 5 stars Good explanations - too many examples., 15 Oct 1999

This review is from: Visual C++ Windows Shell Programming (Paperback)
An excellent book if you're a somewhat-experienced COM developer and want to make your applications integrate better with the shell. Most importantly - this information isn't really available at this level in any other book (which is a shame). Truth is, I feel this book really deserves 5 crowns. The reasons I'm giving it only 4 are: 1. The examples (which are in most cases invaluable) tend to be too long. I find myself spending time following the author around as he builds entire projects instead of focusing on the interesting Shell/COM parts and leaving the rest for the CD. (Nope - No CD) 2. Mr. Esposito is undoubtfully a great resource for shell programming knowledge. Too bad this book suffers from incomplete explanations about subjects Dino finds undocumented and vague. In later publications in MSDN he seemed to know alot more about stuff he described as undocumented back in 98. But don't let my petty remarks change your mind from ordering this baby - it will forever stay close to my desktop for refference (At least a few more monthes...).
