Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Visual Basic is killing programming. Years ago, programming was considered difficult and people had to be taught how to do it. There were people who learned on the job, of course, but generally they were enthusiasts who had the wherewithal for programming and just needed the guidance of an experienced mentor to bring it out. But with the advent of Visual Basic, everyone who can work a mouse is suddenly a programmer.

This book puts programming fundamentals on the Visual Basic agenda. From the pages of keysound.com comes a collection of essays founded on the experiences of a professional writer of Visual Basic. The result is an uncompromisingly honest appraisal of Visual Basic’s strengths and weaknesses, and an invaluable source of wisdom about the 'nuts and bolts' of cutting VB code.

"It’s good to see a book that is based on real-world experience, rather than a re-write of the manual."

- Matt Nicholson, Editor, DNJ

"Written from the heart by someone who’s been there, seen that, noted that it didn’t work, worked out why it didn’t work, fixed the problem, re-coded it, seen it work and then moved on to the next problem. This is experience and 'hard knocks' distilled, and I consider it an essential read."

- Peet Morris, Head of Technology, The Mandelbrot Set

"When I'm looking to get into the guts of VB, Mark Hurst is one of the first people I think of. His articles are concise, elegant and reliable. But don't take my word for it."

- Graham Parker, Chairman, VB User Group

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a reference book, 15 Nov 2001

This review is from: Visual Basic in Your Face: Notes from the Real World (Paperback)
If you are learning to program in Visual Basic, the chances are that you ignore 'Advanced' or 'Hardcore' books and go for the 'How to...' type with lots of example programs. Looking at my bookshelf, I know I did.

It's only when you attempt to write a proper application that you realise 'there's something they're not telling me'. Mark Hurst's book helps to fill in the gaps; why you should not use some of VB's magic features, where should you put the error handlers and many other things you only find out the hard way. As they say: "Experience replaces nothing, but nothing replaces experience".

This might not be the ideal book for a beginner but, if you are trying to progress as a VB programmer, then this is exactly the type of book you should read.

Reaches the parts which other VB books fail to reach.

Rather than yet another book reworking the same old Microsoft / MSDN documentation, here's someone who has a real understanding of how VB works and has taken the time to experiment.

If you are hardcore VB and want to know more, this is the book to read. It's a collection of papers rather than a carefully crafted beginning to end chapter list and thousands of pages. If you want the latter, the list of available titles is endless. This one is unique!
