Product Description

Product Description

Visual Basic provides an excellent introduction to Windows programming, particularly for beginners. The 'Integrated Development Environment' allows you to create fully-fledged Windows applications with the minimum of effort and time. Instructions and programs contained within this book cover mainly version 5.0 of Visual Basic, with the differences between version 5.0 and version 4.0, where appropriate, noted. This book is aimed at those of you who are new to programming, or new to Visual Basic. No previous programming experience is necessary, though familiarity with the use of Windows is assumed. Visual Basic is a substantial programming language and, in a book of this size, it is only possible to give a brief introduction. However, the information given in this Made Simple book is enough to start you on some interesting projects and to show what may be achieved with practice.

Having already had a good experience of the 'Made Simple' books in the form of 'Java Made Simple', I needed a cut-down, easy-to-handle VB programming book and so turned to 'Visual Basic Made Simple'.

Now, if you are the kind of person that gets put off by a book that is thick as it is wide when trying to learn a language from scratch, then finding a book that contains all the basic essentials to get up and running asap and not the waffle is essential.

'Visual Basic Made Simple' was great in this respect; I got programming in VB in no time going through the clear, well explained but simple text orientated towards humans and not freaks. Within two months I had, with some help, developed a fairly complex stand-alone application.

I would definitely recommend it.

Although very powerful, Visual Basic can be very confusing - especially to QBASIC and QuickBASIC programmers, unused to the embarrassment of graphic riches of VB. Morris really does succeed in getting the reader up and programming, and ready for something meatier - such as Paul Lomax's VB and VB in a Nutshell (O'Reilly, 1998).
