Product Description

Amazon Review

Learning a programming language can be a daunting prospect at the best of times, especially for beginners, but it's books like this that make the process just a little bit easier.

Visual Basic in Easy Steps is as comprehensive a guide to Microsoft's versatile programming, scripting and macro language as you could wish for.

Well presented and easy-to-follow tutorials on the basics of creating forms, dialogues and simple variable handling pave the way for the more complex functions such as ActiveX and database programming.

Along the way you'll pick up essentials on the creation and use of tables, menus and toolbars along with some excellent information on using VB to allow Windows applications to interface with each other. The book is filled with box-outs containing the key points and there's even a few tasty morsels thrown in to keep the more experienced user happy.

As far as books of this type go, this has to be one of the most comprehensive with a stack of very well presented and easy-to-follow examples. Definitely a great introduction to the language and for the asking price it represents excellent value for money too. --Steve Russell

Fully updated for version 6, Visual Basic in easy steps deals with some of the essential features of Visual Basic in a clear and concise way, avoiding the complexity usually associated with VB texts. Works particularly well alongside more technical texts that tend to jump in at an advanced level without explaining the basics. -- Computer Shopper, April 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars A clear, well written book 11 Feb 2000
By A Customer
Finally a book that pays attention to the basics that seem to be glossed over in more advanced texts, but are actually vital for beginners. Really easy to understand and it's nice to see a beginners book that is not afraid to use code. The tips to the side of each page were a useful reference. A bargin as well!

My copy of this text is well thumbed and sits alongside another manual on visual basic of over 1000 words costing over £50 which is in pristine condition. To my mind, these books can either try to explain every permutation - and get lost in the detail - or give you a signpost. This book takes the latter approach and allows you to explore the detail via the help menu and microsoft manuals. The layout of the text is particularly good, the explanations are very clear and the examples all work.

Absolutely wonderful. I've bought so many books on VB and they've all been mediocre. This covers all a beginner needs to know and doesn't include the really really simple things. If you are wanting to program; then you probably know how to access VB from the Start Menu!!
I bought this from Waterstones despite higher cost as Amazon don't except normal book vouchers ... shame!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great For Beginners 24 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I'm just starting out learning VB and this book is great. It assumes no prior knowledge of programming yet by the end of the book you know most of what you could ever need. It doesn't waffle on about useless things either. Every page contains some code so you can be guranteed of learning something new (obviously, if you are a pedant don't come back to me saying "I've counted all of the pages and i can't find any code here ... ").

5.0 out of 5 stars Come for the easy steps, stay for the details... 22 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have purchased this book to help me with my HND course in Software Development, which has started with 16 weeks on Visual Basic. I like the way this book is laid out and it gives you loads of good hints and tips on the things to watch out for, which are often as important as the things to do.

Overall, an excellent book to introduce the budding programmer to the language, but who wants to know a little about a lot...
