Product Description

Expertly designed for easy comprehension and retention, this full-immersion study guide delivers the essentials you need to confidently:

From the Author

In-depth coverage of exam topics
This book is designed as a guide to certification for Visual Basic programmers of all skill levels. Each chapter begins with a short statement of prerequisites so that you can easily find the appropriate starting point. If you are an intermediate programmer, for example, with knowledge of Visual Basic forms and controls, but little knowledge of object-oriented programming (OOP), Chapter 9 is your starting point. Each chapter also lists the specific test skills covered in the chapter. These skills map directly to the exam matrix found in Appendix A. Another way to use the book is to check your skills against the exam matrix and then move to the appropriate chapters for coverage of you weak areas. Once you have decided to read a particular chapter, you will find each chapter constructed as a classroom lesson. Each chapter, of course, has a significant amount of narrative explanation, but along with the instruction, you’ll find short demonstrations known as "Check It Outs" that can be accomplished in 5-10 minutes. These items are intended to reinforce the chapter lesson. After you have read the chapter, you will find a complete hands-on exercise at the end. This exercise provides step-by-step coding to walk you through a complete example of the principles in the chapter. In many cases, the exercises will highlight new skills or variations. Therefore, you should consider the hands-on exercise as part of the lesson. You have not finished your learning until the exercise is complete. After the exercise, you will find advanced exercise topics that you can perform on your own. These are listed under the "For the Certified Pro" section. The chapter ends with some suggested reading topics and a quiz. The quiz is designed to give you some idea of what the certification exam is like. Typically, the certification exam consists of two types of questions: Check box and option button. Check box questions have more than one answer while option button questions have only one answer. In the case of the book, you should pick all correct answers for a given question. The answers to the questions are found after the test. The book contains a CD-ROM with complete answers for every "Check It Out", hands-on exercise, and "Certified Pro" exercise. The CD-ROM also contains an installable exam program that provides a timed test similar to the true certification exam. You should use this program as your "final exam" before attempting certification.

... but not enough for the exam. This book is great for a relatively inexperienced programmer to quickly expand their knowledge with examples.

Its biggest flaw is that it really is not sufficient, on its own, to prepare for the exam certification. The cover states "Everything you need to pass Microsoft's Visual Basic 6 Certification Exam". The "blurb" on the cover is, in my opinion, overly ambitious and the contents do not fully realise this ambition. If you are interested in the Microsoft Certification, then this book is a useful supplement only. You will need to have another serious reference with this "guide" serving as backup.

If you are inexperienced and starting a new job as a VB programmer this is an excellent way to rapidly ramp up your knowledge and experience and a very useful reference. However, once you are up to speed and want to take your knowledge to the next level, even just for certification, you will then see the limitations of this "All in one" book.

THE BOTTOM LINE - if you want it to rapidly expand your basic VB programming experience this performs well, however, if you do want a complete "VB Certification" book to prepare you for the MCP's, this is DEFINITELY NOT the book for you unless you want it to supplement your study of another book/course.

Although I didn't use this book to study for any exams, I found the book to be an excellent resource on what VB6 was created to do. Overall the problems at the end of the chapters were challenging although sometimes without point like in the Custom ActiveX chapter. I've wasted much time on other introductory texts when I should have bought this one after going through "VB Step By Step" by MSPress which comes free with the sofware. To become proficient in any of the subjects presented in this book, I don't think you have any other choice but to pursue complete books about what this book presented in each of its chapters. A good complete introductory text. I would have named it "VB6, A Beginners Guide To What To Use it For".

Its time to tell the truth
This book did not cover enough of the package and deployment wizard, nor did it even mention the Treeview controls, which "was" on the test. I would pass on this book. Read more

I found the book to be a satisfactory study guide, with two caveats. First, it should have more info on MTS (this is heavily tested on the Distributed Exam). Read more
