Drawing on the best of the melodic power rock bands such as Rainbow, Judas Priest and Yngwie Malmsteen, Stratovarius play powerful, musically complex yet driving rock and they do it very well. The guitarist Timo Tolki certainly hasn't neglected his practice and burns up the fretboard very effectively without taking over the songs. Tired of ultra hard riff based rock? Try a band that can really play and aren't afraid of letting classical influences show.

From first to last, this album does not fail to please. I agree with the reviewer before me that this album has great choruses, but that's not all. The guitars and keyboards are both really great and both fit together really well. The solos are epic!

Black Diamond is not the magnum opus of this album. Forever Free, Visions (Southern Cross) and Legions all beat it. They're all Stratovarius classics. Visions is amazing! It has loads of Nostradamus quotes in it.

Coming Home and Before The Winter are both great ballads, but Coming Home more so than Before The Winter. Before The Winter lags a bit at times. They're both related to each other I think. Before the Winter is about a guy leaving his girlfriend/wife to go away to fight in a war, and he'll be back before the winter. In Coming Home, well... He's coming home :D. I think somewhere in Coming Home I heard the Before The Winter melody played in the background, I'll have to listen again...

If not for the truly amazing songs on here, then buy it for the album art! I assure you, the cover looks 10 times better in real life than it does on the computer. It took my break away when I first got it, and it still does.

I love this album! To me, the best parts of this album are the choruses... they ROCK! Some of them sort of remind my of the hymns that people sing in church... but with metal style speed picked riffs and double bass drum loops behind them. This may sound like a bit of a stupid combination, but I think it really works... What spoils this CD is the annoying keyboard and guitar 'shredding'... once you've heard one solo, you've heard them all... and to be honest, I don't really want to hear them once. BUT, this single problem of this music isn't enough for it to be only four stars. The production of this album is also very good too. I'll say it again to get my point across.... GREAT CHORUSES!!!
