Product Description

Synopsis

The spectacular format of "Visions of Splendour in Islamic Art and Culture" allows the reader to view the magnificent sweep of the art of Islam in a unique way. You can see at a glance exactly what was happening in the different arts and countries of Islam within the same period, enabling monuments to be seen in the light of key events. The chart is lavishly illustrated with colour photographs showing the magnificence of Islamic architecture and exquisite objects from one of the world's most important private collections of Islamic art, The Khalili Collection. There is a section devoted to the historical dynasties of the Islamic world, and a list of Islamic rulers, together with a four-page gatefold map encapsulating the global aspects of Islamic history and culture. The Timeline is followed by an essay on the History of Islamic Art and Architecture, with individual chapters devoted to calligraphy, Qur'ans, miniature painting, bookbinding, lacquer-painting, pottery and ceramics, glass and rock crystal, metalwork, arms and armour, jewellery, carpets and textiles, coins and architecture.

2.0 out of 5 stars SAME CONTENT, DIFFERENT TITLE! 12 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
Being a fan of Prof. Khalili and his collection, I was so eagerly awaiting the arrival of this book when I ordered it from Amazon. This item is indeed fantastic for someone who is only just starting to explore the rich culture of Islamic Art throughout the ages. Even an excellent reference book for the learned in the field. However, this publication (edition) contains exactly the same content as Khalili's previous publication "The Timeline History of Islamic Art and Architecture" - and therefore I was very dissapointed. The ONLY things that are different are literally the title, front cover art work and the overall size of this publication is about 1/3 smaller than the previous mentioned text. The content, layout, pictures, maps, essay, etc are all identical. So if you already have the Timeline History... book then do not buy this one. If you don't, you might still want to purchase The Timeline History one because in a bigger size the pictures and amps are far better.
