Format: Hardcover
This would appear to be the same as Visions of Earth

At first glance this is an impressive tome. a large volume of over 500 pages crammed with full colour photographs. The theme is the beauty, majesty and wonder of the world, be it the natural wonders, the people, or aspects of the man made world, they all feature here from the large and magnificent right down to the minute. The photographs are grouped according to a number of different and seemingly arbitrary subjects or ideas such as Curves, Surfaces, Unexpected, Spectrum and many more. Each photograph carries a brief caption identifying the place and the photographer along with thirty to forty words of description.

There is no denying the book has impact, and the photography is for the most part impressive, but is that enough? On closer inspection one or two trends it soon become apparent. The general presentation is rather overwhelming; many of the images are printed as full page bleed pictures, often the image crosses the gutter, they very quickly becomes tiresome to the eyes. The vast majority of the pictures are very warm in tone, strong reds and yellows seem to predominate, and very many are high contrast with areas of deep and dense shadow. In fact the colours in general are over dramatic, exaggerated and often gaudy, sometimes to an extreme. There are a few exceptions, but these are rare indeed. There a few pages where the photograph is presented on the white background of the page, and these come as a welcome relief; they also suggest how much better the book would be if the majority of pictures were shown in this way.

Beautiful photography book! 22 Nov. 2011
By Photography enthusiast - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I bought this book as a gift for my father, who loves beautiful coffee-table books. Before wrapping it, I decided to thumb through the book to make sure he would like it. However, as I delved deeper and deeper, I became enthralled with all the beautiful photos - they're absolutely stunning!

The photos range all over the world, from action photos to beautiful closeup shots of tiny little insects. Not all of the photographs are perfect, but there are enough amazing photos that make you wonder at how the photographer captured the image.

Absolutely beautiful and highly recommended!

Captivating images that will leave you spellbound 7 Feb. 2012

"Visions of Earth" is another magnificent collection of photographs from National Geographic. It's a huge book, with over 500 pages of awe-inspiring photography from around the world, including both land and sea images.

The book is subtitled "Beauty, Majesty, Wonder," and that's an apt description. I was mesmerized looking at the incredible photography. The book is divided into fifteen themes, each having a brief text introduction, followed by the images for that theme. There's some marvelous imagery here, and I would hate to be a contest judge and have to choose only one winner from the lot.

There's something here for everyone, and I can't imagine anyone flipping through the pages of "Visions of Earth" without a lot of oohs and ahs.

Not visions of earth, visions of Culture 13 Sept. 2013
By Redwidowz - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This book is 80% images of people and culture, not really "earth." The photo cover is VERY misleading. The pictures are cool, but this is something that you can look at in under 15 minutes at a book store. Probably not something you'd open up and look at everyday. Could be a cool coffee table book for guests, but otherwise only good for one quick flip through.

Spectacular Images of Our Gorgeous Planet 27 Nov. 2011
By Dr. Bojan Tunguz - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Planet earth is a wonderful place. We are truly blessed to be able to claim such a hospitable and colorful place for our home. Most of us, however, will not be able to see even the fraction of natural beauty that graces our planet or come in touch with diverse and interesting peoples from the distant regions of the globe. Fortunately for us, the photojournalists of the National Geographic have over the years done a remarkable job of capturing some of the most amazing travel photographs that you will ever come across.

National Geographic is renown for its in-depth reporting on various places and regions of our world, and has for decades been the gold standard in reporting from the most distant corners of our planet. It is also famous for its beautiful photographs, and this sumptuous coffee table book is a collection of some of the most beautiful and memorable photos that have graced its pages over the years.

The book is divided into several sections or "portfolios." These include "Beginnings," "Pattern," "Unexpected," "Aggregation," "Spectrum," "Radiance" ad many others. These sections are all united around a loose common theme. The photographs are truly stunning, but if you are a photography purist you might take an issue with a healthy dose of image manipulation that went into some of the photographs.

"Visions of Earth" is a 500-plus-page large format coffee-table book. It is beautifully designed and if you enjoy sites of nature and candid journalistic shots then you will absolutely love it. Highly recommend it.

I ordered this book as a gift, and I was surprised at the size of it. It's a smaller book than you would think (maybe about the height of a regular paperback) which I think is perfect because there will be no problem fitting it on a book shelf. Despite it's size it is a substantial book (really thick), and it's filled with great photos.
