Awesome BUT misleading sell! 23 Jun. 2008
By Bruno Ferreira - Published on
Format: Hardcover
The books are awesome for sure BUT I think Amazon should warn buyers that this "book" Visions is actually a hard case containing the books Transfigurations and Sacred Mirrors so that people don't buy both or all of them (as was the case here).
(In fact, on the Amazon page it is recommended to buy Visions and Transfigurations....)

Perfect for Alex Grey Fans 11 Sept. 2007
By Garrett P. Herzfeld - Published on
Format: Hardcover
This is an amazing collection. If you don't mind spending the money this is the best option for the complete Alex Grey experience. It comes with both of his books in beautiful hardcover format. They aren't just all of his pictures either. There are many, many side articles and writings with pictures describing many fascinating things about his life and works and other teachings. Plus, you get the 6 glossy drawings you can frame on your wall. The book contains close-ups of many of the paintings so you can see the incredible detail put into them. My only complaint is that the little lock on the outside of the whole hardcover casing can be hard to lock because of the books on the inside pushing out, but this is a minor detail. I highly recommend this for anyone craving the complete Alex Grey experience in hardcover.

A nice collection of Alex Grey's work 22 April 2009
By Karageorgakis Panagiotis - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Visions comes in a hard case that includes both Sacred Mirrors and Transfigurations (so if you buy this item make sure you're not also buying any of these two books). Also, in the case were 6 (if I remember correctly) frameable A4-size posters of work by Alex Grey, but keep in mind that these are not prints of his most known works but rather some new material.

I bought this combo mainly for Sacred Mirrors, which includes the artwork of Alex Grey that I admire the most. This work is beautiful and inspiring, it seems as if Grey managed to depict the human being and the 'energetic' entity of the self in one clear, vivid and transparent image. These works have motivated me after watching the video about the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.

Transfigurations contains some grotesque photos that I don't really like to look at; the artwork is nice but I think no match to the Sacred Mirrors series.

Both books include text as well as images, i.e. do not expect to have a book full of images, there's a lot of text inside about the artist and his work so you get to know them better.

I would definitely give 5 stars to Sacred Mirrors and maybe 4 stars to Transfigurations, but I'd still rate the combination as a 5-star as a whole. The print quality is also excellent.

An Interesting Artist, But Overall Redundant, Disappointingly Saccharine 23 Jun. 2014
By C. K. Lidster - Published on
Format: Hardcover
My previous impression of Grey's work has always been positive, usually limited, however, to an album cover or random .jpeg. After seeing 'Visions' offered on Amazon for a decently reduced sticker price, I did a Google tour of his works and was sufficiently intrigued to purchase a copy. While I'm sure hardcore fans will love this, and appreciate the box that apparently doubles as an 'altar', the sickly sweet blend of Near-Buddhism and mystical new-age ingredients quickly became annoying.

'Transfigurations', one of the two volumes included in the boxset, is enough to provide a satisfying overview of Grey's interesting development as an artist, with numerous examples of his best works. The design and layout are uninspired, but the work is always interesting. His visionary style incorporates anatomical perspectives combined with psychedelic depictions of spiritual energies mapped out as they shift and intersect with other fields generated by organisms and environments. His palette and patterns have an oriental influence, but he is also indebted to the great visionary artists, from Blake to Fuchs. While on the surface his paintings seem to have dark themes, owing to the flayed, grotesque appearance of his subjects, most are actually mundane x-ray snapshots: a father reading to his child, a couple kissing, a couple having sex, childbirth, etc.

The sentimental leanings that attempt to celebrate the little miracles of life are more akin to Norman Rockwell than Irving Norman, and left me wishing he might suffer a crisis of faith that could yield a greater percentage of darker, more challenging canvases. The other volume, 'Sacred Mirrors', is shorter than the first, and features lesser works related to the homemade religion and it's accompanying 'Chapel of Sacred Mirrors'. I don't need to drink an artists' spiritual koolaid in order to appreciate their art; but Grey's species of glassy-eyed, frozen-smiled faith makes me sleepy. I have to admit that the oversized 'altar' is pretty cool, though.

Would give it 20 stars if I could 29 Jan. 2009

Simply amazing!! Both hardcover books have a lot of large, beautful pictures of Alex Grey's art, and he presents quite a bit of info about him and his art. The six framable prints are great, and you can use the sturdy wooden box as a display for the two other pictures that are on the inside of it. If you have even a passing interest in Alex Grey, visionary art, spirituality, or psychedelia, you deffinately won't be disapointed!!
