Roger Fry 30 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Fascinating to read Roger Fry's words in the early 2oth century changing his ideas as new isms constantly flowed out of Paris and Europe. If you are interested in the history of English aesthetics in the first half of the 20th century this set of essays by Fry gives deep insight into his changing ideas on French and English (southern middle class English really) Post Impressionism. Very useful accompaniment to Frances Spalding's recent biography of Fry. I am also concurrently reading Fry's friend Clive Bell's "Since Cezanne" collection of essays which is useful when learning about Fry's development of aesthetic theory such as the idea of significant form. Fry had a big influence on English avant guarde artists including Henry Moore and Duncan Grant and was a helpful sounding board for Virginia Woolfe and others in the Bloomsbury set.

This is a fantastic and seminal piece of work. However the formatting is so awful that I gave up trying to make sense of it on my kindle and ordered it from the library instead. Examples include chapter headings halfway through an essay, random strings of meaningless characters in the middle of a paragraph, you name it, it's here. I love my kindle but this version of this work is dreadful, and is the kind of thing that gives e-readers a bad name.

Disappointed 9 Mar 2012

This reprint is readable but contains a lot of underlining and other notations. It seems that the original could have been cleaned up somewhat before reprinting. Nabu Press warns of the imperfections but they appear to me to be one of the worst reprint services outside of OCR reprints in total.
