I expected something noisy, spiky and fragmented from Boredoms; maybe that's the case with their earlier recordings, but 'Vision Creation Newsun' is a wonderfully focussed and streamlined record. Frenetic tribal percussion underpins blissful electronics, psychedelic rock riffs and transcendental chants. The first half dozen tracks feel like a single journey through various environments and elements -- fire, ice, sea, deep space -- growing gradually more subtle and contemplative. Track 3 could be Can, track 4 Hawkwind, except that neither ever made music that sounded this confident and positive. The later arrangements are simply beautiful progressive electro-acoustic pop of the sort found on Cornelius's 'Point', although a little more ecstatic. Like Cornelius, and so many other Japanese musicians, Boredoms seem to have an instinctive understanding of tension and release, dynamics, and the importance of empty space.
Considering that in one of his previous bands, Hanatarashi, Yamataka Eye used to cut up dead cats with an electric saw on stage, this current Boredoms outfit is a completely uplifting experience. Even the most raucous sections feel like a celebration of human potential and of the act of creation.
Explosions, guitars, bangs, clattering metal noises, screeches, howls and whistles all crash together to make for a big old beautiful, blazing racket. This is not just noise for noise's sake though; a criticism that's often been laid at Boredoms' door.
Led by the whispers and shrieks of frontman Yamataka Eye and driven by the machine-like percussive skills of Yoshimi P-we, 'Vision Creation Newsun' is a throbbing, swirling psychedelic opus.
Quite simply, the latest album by this notoriously unlistenable Japanese noise outfit is one of the most extraordinary records you'll hear all year. After more than ten years the Boredoms have made their most accomplished album to date.
Super ae was a transition point to me from their early sound to now, so if you enjoyed Super ae in it's entirety, you are bound to enjoy this. God it's so hard to pick a favourite Boredoms album because their all so good, it's like picking a favourite child...
This is one of the best purchases I have made this year so far, and I think it will be hard to find a better album before the year is up.
