Review

"Not the next stage in learning how to deal with people from a different culture, but a guide to growing viruses in order to conduct research in virology. Mostly British, with a German and a few South African, scientists detail the procedures for isolating, identifying, concentrating, and purifying viruses. They also describe electron microscopy as applied to virology, the production of virus vaccines and antiserum, and testing antiviral drugs."--SciTech Book News

Product Description

Virus Culture: A Practical Approach provides a broad treatment of the principles and practice of virus culture and will be of interest to all those, whether in academic, industrial, or clinical research, involved in virus culture. The first chapter is an overview of cell culture techniques essential for virologists. Other techniques then covered are isolating, identifying, concentrating, and purifying viruses. Electron Microscopy as applied to virology is also explained. Chapter 6 is about creating virus vaccines and chapters 7 and 8 cover antiserum production, monoclonal antibodies and antiviral drug testing. The final chapter describes the methods used to study plant viruses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text, 27 Sep 2000
By P. Barriga - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Virus Culture: A Practical Approach (Practical Approach Series) (Hardcover)
The title of this book is accurate: A Practical Approach. Each chapter is a concise summary of accepted methods with lots of recipes. An excellent introductory text for the clinical virologist, laboratory technicians, and microbiology trainees.

The weak aspects of this book are shared by almost all other textbooks on clinical health sciences microbiology laboratory methods. There are no statements on reliability; the strenght of the evidence of clinical validity, likelyhood ratios in clinical scenarios, nor are there statements on test precision; longditudinal performance characteristics, process control.

In the end, I will get alot of use out of this book and I am satisfied with this purchase.
