A Must Read book as you consider Virtualization! 6 July 2009
By G. Hargett - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As I look at corporate IT today I realized the technology industry is being dramatically impacted by Virtualization technology! How we use and manage servers and storage hardware, and how we deliver business services through software applications will change over the next 3-5 years. It's a daunting task to understand virtualization and the many different solutions out there. Let me say "finally" a book that will truly help you understand the What's and How To's you will face when considering a virtual environment. The author's have put together a great guide that takes you step-by- step through the process of evaluation, implementation and the potential challenges you will encounter. The process of understanding how to plan and move to virtualized infrastructure is both complex and confusing; this guide is very helpful in achieving a successful strategy. This book is the right resource you will come back to time and again, just like I have!

Good introduction, though a bit dated 22 Jan 2012
By B. Staehle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
There are very few books that are both vendor neutral and provide vendor comparisons while still providing good coverage of the broad field of virtualization. This is one of those few. While ever so slightly biased toward Microsoft, the authors do not hesitate to acknowledge where other products (e.g., VMware) have superior features. My only complaint is that since it was published in early 2009, it is a bit dated. It doesn't cover the latest advances of VMware or Microsoft products which have both made significant advances since early 2009. Overall, this is a very good introduction to the topic. My hope is that they update this with a second edition soon.

Hard to take credibly.... 3 July 2011
By P. Oh - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While i haven't completely finished the book it is clear from reading the first few chapters that this will be a challenge to complete. The authors trip over themselves repeatedly talking about 'their' methodologies or 'their research' which could be presented simply as a summarized list of common sense items. They also introduce new terms that are not used industry wide to further differentiate themselves which ultimately end up confusing you. The writing is also very disjointed jumping from technical to business topics and items that were never introduced properly. Subjects are also intermingled haphazardly with desktop and server virtualization repeatedly addressed in the same paragraph and 'green' computing taking a prominent part of the first chapter - is this a book on virtualization or Real Simple Magazine? If i had read this in a store after a first few pages I would not have bought it as the authors and editors do not know how to present the topic in a clear manner. As it is I'm hoping to get some technical value out of the book even though most of the articles i have read online have provided better and more concise information.
