5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must 1 May 2011
If you're into electronica, and particularly the ambient end of the spectrum, this album is an absolute must buy. Quite simply my favourite electronica album ever, with only mild caveat that closing track Lagoon West goes on a bit. I've got this on double vinyl which gives it that lovely soft edge. It's 18 years old and still sounds great. Also has the accolade of making radio static sound beautiful (November X-ray Mexico). NB - buy this on CD, or somewhere other than iTunes for the MP3 version ,as on iTunes they've messed up the sequencing of the first three tracks - and it does make a difference as they should blend seamlessly into each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars contender for my favourite electronic album 8 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase
It's difficult to think of anything that hasn't been said already, but I used to put this on with The Number of Magic every time I rode the Shinkansen in Japan. I would fall asleep in Kyoto, wake up in Osaka, go back to sleep in Shinagawa and wake up in Nara. Every time I was greeted with these mesmerising albums. They both rank very high, but I have to say Virtual State beats Number of Magic as there's a little more mania about it. Number of Magic is very hypnotic and dubby. This is more psychedelic, with repeated leitmotifs of radio transmissions and strange dialtones. It's also got a bit more of an Afrocentric vibe like Digital Lifeforms. Frequency Band is one of the best ambient techno tunes ever made. I love this album probably because of the strong association I have with it and Japan. For everyone else, try to listen to it first. If you like his other work, you'll like this.
I can't rate it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best album ever! 22 Jun 2004
It took about 2 or 3 years to grow on me and for me to play it from end to end, I knew it was good but never got from start to finish. The tribal chanting and techno beats are so well handled you are drawn deep into the tunes. It is hard to believe that they are simply samples on a computer. Better than the sister album made while he was signed to Warp Records "The Number of Magic". Richard H Kirk is God and this album the Holy Grail. My all time favourite album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten classic 8 April 2003
This is an album of quality music, that is as new today as it was then. A forgotten classic, that shows that dance music can be innovating and refreshing, it's hard to believe it's nearly a decade old. Lagoon west sticks out as one of my personal favourites. I consider Kirk to be one of the all time greats, who could teach many of todays pretenders a thing or two when it comes to making quality tunes. It's just a sshame that he doesn't recieve the credit he deserves.
