Book Description

The next best thing to working with a live model, Virtual Pose[registered] 3 provides professional and student artists with an accurate and convenient method of viewing the human form - without needing access to a live model and studio sessions. Digital artist Mario Henri Chakkour has created a CD-ROM and companion book that features models in 70 high resolution poses, images which can be zoomed in on and rotated 360 degrees. Painters, sculptors and other artists will welcome the opportunity to study at length each detail and subtlety of the human form, giving them a deeper understanding of shape, form, and gesture.

As someone who draws the male figure more than women (and finds it more difficult), I found this book to be almost entirely useless. It features many, many, many poses of young, thin women and a couple of pages at the back dedicated to an overweight middle aged man. The last pages were the only ones I found of any use. It would be nice if there was some variety here - instead of having 3/4 of the book dedicated to young, slim women... how about at least one page for the older woman? A younger, slightly overweight woman? Maybe a younger, more toned man? A muscle-covered man? A body building woman? Women with curves is all well and good, but men and their clumsy looking clunks and muscles...?! The poses are the usual 'arty' ridiculous nonsense, which is fine... but it would be better if there was some body type variation here.

The CD-ROM rotation feature is excellent, yes, and the variety of poses in the book alone are enough to help you along if you don't want to use the PC, but come on now. A little variety would be nice - not all humans are slim young women you know! The first thing you may notice when observing the human form is that there are two genders - female AND male!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource. 13 Jun 2005
Format:Hardcover
If you are an artist, wether painter or sculptor, this is the resource for you. Not everyone is lucky enough to have live models at hand, so this is the next best thing. I wouldn't be without it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars very useful 22 Nov 2006
Format:Hardcover
I've had this a while and it's been used quite a bit, unlike a lot of books I've bought! The CD that comes with it is great for drawing from and the ability to pan round the model means you can pick the angle to draw from. If you can't get to a life class (and even if you can, you can't practice drawing too much) it's a must. I'd also recommend Art Models life nudes, which does pretty much the same thing, but without the smooth panning you get on this one.
