Product Description

CD Description

Released amidst a huge amount of industry-hype, New YorkersThe Virgins' self titled debut is part of the 'dance-rock' scene pervading the clubs of New York. Snapped up by Atlantic Records before they were even fully formed, The Virgins have toured with many big names, and such was the rush to get their debut album out that it contains many tracks from their much-lauded demo, The Virgins '07. The album is preceded by the single 'Private Affair'.

About the Artist

They've drawn comparisons to Gang Of Four and the Strokes, but they have thier own distinct sound: garage and a bit of funk. The New York-based quartet play a brand of soul and R&B-tinged rock. In "Rich Girls", a fantastically funky bassline bobs and weaves while two angular guitars battle it out. Meanwhile Cummings' vocals (alternately drowsy, falsetto and energetic) explore his fascination with the inner psyche of a "Rich Girl" as he croons, "I'll tell you everything I know/Everything little thing I know/You've got a lovely way with words/Is that the way you see the world ?".....

2.0 out of 5 stars No Richard Branson here!, 20 Jul 2008
By James B. Spink "Jim" (Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This first offering from New York's The Virgins is a very mixed bag indeed - one of the very few products to carry the Virgin name without having the guiding hand of Richard Branson steering it towards success! And this band could certainly do with some guidance.

The music would have seemed pretty contemporary about thirty years ago in the company of the Modern Lovers or Talking Heads. Today, although there are a few catchy songs here, there is nothing to get very excited about. Some of the albums concepts are fairly bizarre; remember when it used to be clever to have that long track at the end of a CD when the music faded to silence, the disc played on for a few minutes more then there was a bonus track? These guys pull that one here - except you just get a weird distorted conversation at the end of your long wait. Hardly inspiring and likely to become extremely annoying on repeated playing.

The CD also has some enhanced material for PC use. All I could get mine to do, however, was display a registration box which didn't work - manually entering the URL gave a web page for requesting email updates from the band. I declined! The size of the enhancement file indicated that it should do a lot more. The CD also seems to automatically put itself into random play when using a computer to play it, which might explain the stupid way the tracks are numbered on the track listing on the box.

Clocking in at less than 35 minutes - and considering that a chunk of that is silence hidden in the final track - this album represents pretty poor value for money. The band obviously have some high profile friends and a big label recording deal, so maybe there is some potential here. Perhaps their next offering may reveal their true quality. As it is this current offering should not be considered as a casual purchase by the unwary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unspoilt, 27 Jul 2008

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Although I agree that there is nothing that makes this album stand out from the crowd of post-Arctic Monkeys guitar bands, it is still an altogether vibrant and accessible collection of upbeat songs - putting it ahead of many of its contemporaries. Track 3: `Rich Girls' is the standout for me; shades of Scissor Sisters or Sam Sparro's laid-back vocal decadence, with a hypnotic old-school beat. The undercurrent of funk lifts the CD from mediocre and the singer's drawl is pleasingly nonchalant. The hidden track at the end is somewhat bizarre - not so much a song as an indecipherable chuntering - but this apart it is well worth a listen and certainly shows potential for future releases.

2.0 out of 5 stars As the cover suggests..., 25 Jul 2008
By Ian Shine (England) - See all my reviews

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
...this album is about as annoying as finding chewing gum stuck on the bottom of your shoe. Its best feature is that it clocks in at just over half-an-hour, because if I had been subjected to anymore of this bland 'funk garage pop' I might have had to lobotomise myself.
It's really uininventive, slightly upbeat 3 minute guitar tunes. It's not got the buzz of a punk pop album, or the squeaky shine of a pop album. It just falls somewhere in the middle and achieves very little in the process. The first few tracks are easy to tap your feet to, but all in all its a very forgettable record. I can't really remember the melodies of any of the tracks now that I have turned it off.
Comparisons the The Strokes are a little bit lost on me - it struck me more as being a cross between The Feeling and Razorlite, neither of whom I like. If I did like them, I still can't imagine why I'd want to buy this record, because both of the aforementioned bands do what they do with a lot more style and conviction than The Virgins. Who on earth decides that bands like this deserve a record label?

3.0 out of 5 stars A new one on me, but worth investigating
The Virgins are a combo that clearly set out to amuse and confuse, what with randomly numbering the tracks on the album and boasting some pretty sloppy cover art. Read more

This is not bad but also not great. To my ears it's a little samey and is unlikely to be a long term success for the band. Read more

New Louis XIV anyone? That's the band, not the former King of France. This is style-over-substance, sub-standard pop-rock. To an educated ear, the sound is pastiche. Read more
