A wide variety of hauntings here and there in the Virginia Peninsula, 4 Oct 2011

I think a lot of ghosts and I hope they think well of me... there certainly are plenty of them to be had in this book, chock full of photos. Ms. Kinney has assembled stories and accounts from all over York County, James City County, Poquoson, West Point, Williamsburg, Gloucester County and nearby areas. She also did a large number of investigations herself. I liked the down-to-earth way she writes, as though sitting next to you sharing the events. The account of a young woman and her fiancee encountering Civil War soldiers taking part in a spectral hanging just outside their front yard was pretty neat! I work in wild places as part of my job and know the way briars, tree limbs and holes in the ground, hidden by vegetation, can trip a person, so I have to hand it to the author and her husband for braving the Crawford Road bridge embankment in the dark of the night, a cold one at that, no street lamps to guide her, to record any Electonic Voice Phenomena that she could.

I live in this area of the country and was naturally curious to read this book when it came to our library. Nothing really new here if you've read other ghost stories of the area. Most seem to be a rehashing of L. B. Taylor's work (but the author does mention her thanks to him). There are several glaring editorial errors that make sections of it difficult to get through. I found this really strange since other areas of the book are beautifully written and very interesting. One of the worst errors concerns the author's mistake in identifying Fort Monroe's Chamberlain Hotel by the wrong name! At first I thought someone just made a mistake on one of the photos, but they are all wrong, as well as all the text references. I was really looking forward to reading this, but the mistakes made it disappointing.

Experienced author Pamela K. Kinney has taken a very interesting area of Virginia and brought its important history to life.
In this book Pamela tells true stories and those of myth and legend. She writes of apparitions and unusual sightings, such as Bigfoot and UFOs. Pamela tells well known tales and some little known tales of this area. All of the tales are in or near this historic "haunted triangle" in Virginia.
The reader is taken on a tour of haunted plantations and houses, down historic haunted roads and across legendary bridges. Pamela tells the story of each place, elaborating on it by adding her own experiences and impressions.
The photography throughout the book is amazing in color and detail. Pamela Kinney is thorough in taking the reader on her journey through time in this historic area. She has written other paranormal books and is a master costumer, as well. She can be found on both her own website and Facebook.
