One or two firms have brought out all eight Virginian series in the last two or three years but the quality is extremely poor. Now at last we have the second series 'fully restored and digitally remastered'. These Region 1 productions seem to work perfectly well on my Sony. They've done a wonderful job. They've restricted the number of episodes per disc-side to three, which allows for better quality. The picture on my 26 inch screen was great and the presentation in an embossed metal box and nicely cased discs was a delight to see. And, to top it all, there's a bonus disc of recent interviews with James Drury and Clu Gulager. Of all the TV Western series that came out in the '60s, in my view, the Virginian was the best. There's several reasons why. The first requisite, a strong cast of main actors with many excellent guest stars throughout the episodes. Then the 70-75 minute format that allowed writers to broaden the episodes out to film length. This gave them so much more scope to develop the theme and its characters. And, unbelievable that with over two hundred episodes over the eight series the quality and variety of the story lines remained top level throughout. I just hope that we get some more seasons produced like this. Clu Gulager, the tough deputy sheriff comes into the third, fourth and fifth seasons adding an even more exciting dimension to this great Western series. If you're a Western fan don't miss out.
