This book is hilarious. In some chapters I was laughing out loud and in others I was cringing because I’d been through similar scenarios myself.

The only reason this book lost a star was due to some clashing issues I had with the characters. Mainly Ellie.
For the most part she was nice but I found her a complete cow at times, and I sometimes found it hard to feel sorry for her or relate to her, but that was the limit of my gripes. This was only partly because I wanted to scream at her how daft she was being. I was still a Virgin at 21 (yeh I don’t care who knows) and so what? I wasn’t the only one.

The story itself was one of the funniest things I have ever read. I laughed out loud on several occasions, my favourite being a close run between the blow job learning scene and the bathtub incident near the beginning of the book.
I also absolutely loved Paul and Emma and the Vlog idea, it was pure genius. On a more serious note, I wish this had been around when I was a teen. I mean I learned a few bits from this and I’m now 27. For example, I did not know that there were different types of Brazilian Wax. So least I know what to ask for if I ever get the bizarre urge to do it.

The main message in this book is to accept who you are though, and if you don’t want to do certain things it’s fine. Just because everyone else is out popping there cherry with every Tom, Dick and Harry, it doesn't mean you have to.
I think this could be a good book for teens to read as part of Sex Ed because at least then if some of them make the choice to have sex they will do so more informed.
Overall, though this is a light funny read, there are some serious issues dealt with in a fun, humorous way that I feel will appeal to teens and adults alike.

Firstly thank you so much to Cara at Harlequin for sending me an advanced copy of this book for review! When I got the e-mail about the book it sounded exactly like something I would enjoy reading.

The story is all about 21 year old virgin Ellie. She’s the daughter of a strict Greek mother and has never really felt like she fitted in. She feels like her virgin status is holding her back and sets out on a mission to rectify the situation.

The story starts off with Ellie despairing about her virginity and swiftly follows to her plan to de-virginise herself before graduating. As I’ve said I was intrigued by the blurb of this story and I loved that the writing is almost informally diarised. The connection between me as the reader and Ellie’s character felt quite real as a lot of the narrative evokes memories of my own experiences with different aspects of growing up. I know that the title of the book suggests that this might all be about sex but actually there are some other important coming of age issues in there too like figuring out who you are learning to be happy in your own skin.

As the story unfolds Ellie begins to explore at length becoming a woman which may turn some readers off as the narrative is rather descriptive in parts but in all honesty each reader will have their own experience that they will be triggered to reminisce about. The prose is funny and carries along at a fast pace. I devoured this in two sittings as it was really easy to read.

The novel explores the pressures that every young woman faces (not just in terms of their sex life) in a very open and honest way which shows just how much we try to live up to expectations set by films, magazines and even books.

Not for the faint hearted, this is a very frank and funny read. This real life Cosmo guide is like a Louise Rennison (Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging) novel for new adult readers and is so easy to identify with!

Ellie is a 21-year-old university student, who has yet to go the full distance in the horizontal tango department. She tends to rely heavily on the support of her close friends. Her attitude to life in general and her problems, is quite flighty and immature. Jealousy rears its ugly head when others do better and they have any kind of sexual exploit or romantic relationship, especially when it is one of her friends.

Everything, simply everything revolves around her virginity. Almost to the point of obsession, which is probably why she is letting it influence all her relationships and her daily life.

The situations are slightly exaggerated and overly dramatic to instil an overall sense of comedy to otherwise awkward situations. The sexual scenarios are quite descriptive, so I wouldn’t recommend this for younger readers. To be more specific, I mean talking about certain sexual positions or a how-to descriptions on giving certain sexual gratification to your male bed partner. It is done in a funny, joking way, a conversation between good friends having a laugh.

So, I wouldn’t give this to my very shy and inexperienced 16-year-old yet, but I would have given it my more experienced (at the time) 18-year-old, and I will be giving it to my older daughters to read.

It would have been nice to see a more realistic and serious representation of virginity in our day and age. In that regard Sanghani is right on the button. There is a clear lack of books on the subject, especially ones written in a way that eases the fear and pressure.

Virginity is a choice which is often frowned upon and scorned at. The pressure by peers to do as they do and be as they are makes it difficult for young people to make their own choices.
