Public school horror, 21 May 2004
This review is from: The Virgin Killers (Hardcover)
Virgin Killers is quite an ambitious work. It sets out to cover the rocky state of the British Establilshment, the falling apart of our Royal family and Parliamentary system while also charting the real rot that lies behind our famed public school syetm (and, yes, I'm an ex-public schoolboy). The triller part works well, in a convoluted sort of way but what impresses me most is the backdrop of fading English institutions, such as the afaorementioned public/prep schools. And if you're Jesuit educated, wherever you are in the world, you'll get a kick out their murderous tendencies! I'd love to see the next book in Awde's series when it comes out.

This is quite an intriguing novel. It's a peculiar combination of conspiracy thriller, popular history and anti-Jesuit tract. Some of the characters definitely have a sinister twist, like Faucon the ex SAS Jesuit headmaster and the Italian female assasin specializing in arson. Awde teases the reader with hints that the true motive behind the murders which might have something to do with recent well publicized scandals in the Catholic church. Apparently this is the first in a series called "The Public School Chronicles". I'm intrigued to see what's coming next.

Intelligent entertainment, 21 May 2004
This review is from: The Virgin Killers (Hardcover)
This book has the shape of a well-crafted murder mystery cum political thriller, with the plot twists, surprises and guesswork that goes with the genre.
On top of that, though, Awde also gives us a very personal tour of British society, history, politics, the secret service, secret societies, and religion - the Catholic religion in particular - in a wonderful mix of information and opinion.
The plot of The Virgin Killers is at least as likely as what goes on in many a diseased political mind, and the many asides giving the background to the story in Awde's drily ironic style raises the experience from pure entertainment (and there's nothing wrong with that) to the thought-provoking and chuckle-inducing.
Too intellectual for beach readimg, The Virgin Killers deserves a rainy weekend all to itself.
