5.0 out of 5 stars Virgin (American) Beauty 13 July 2012
Format:Audio CD
Had this when it first came out...took years to get a cd version. Most of what the other reviewers say is true. It is accessible but still outstanding jazz. Who, with open ears could not enjoy this? I have got lots of friends into this jazz via this album. But, one reviewer shows how elitist and completely stupid some jazz "aficionados" really are...Jerry Garcia adds a lot by understated brilliant playing. As Ornette himself said at the time of release, he was amazed by Jerry's skill, intuitive playing (yeah...that is what jazz is all about deaf lugs!) and "ear". So, if you are a TRUE jazz, TRUE Dead fan or are just plain open to great music then buy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The King of Harmelodic Funk!!! 19 Aug 2002
By S. Finefrock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This was introduction to later period Ornette Coleman, and to my ears remains one of his better electric recordings. Ornette and Prime Time really cook up a storm on this release of mostly short numbers. Jerry Garcia (!) from the Grateful Dead even sits in on a couple of selections and feels right at home. The music is well played and loaded with feeling, especially the untitled, mostly solo closing track.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ornette's best Prime Time Album! HIs best album of the 1980s 29 Jun 1999
By dshannon@aisl.com.au - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
How can this review express how cool this album is? Ornette and Prime Time go OFF! This album has everything, even Jerry Garcia!
The most underated album of the 1980s!
Vigin Beauty has some of Ornette's best Harmelodic funk tunes (Healing the Feeling), Harmelodic country tunes (Happy Hour) and those intensely beautiful harmelodic ballads (Virgin Beauty, Chanting & Unknown Artist).
Buy it...learn the tunes, regardless of whether yhou play an instrument or not!

5.0 out of 5 stars Coleman's electric Africa 27 Oct 2012
By Walter H. Combs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In this 1988 album, Jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman is joined by his electric band Prime Time - two guitars, two basses and his son Denardo's drums - with Jerry Garcia joining in with a third guitar for extra measure, and the results are among Coleman's best albums. ``Dancing in Your Head'' from a decade earlier many people found grating - even though overall, that now hard-to-find set is better than ``Virgin Beauty'' - ``Virgin Beauty'' will appeal more to the casual listener. The melodies, especially on ``Beourgeois Boogie'' and the title track are rollicking and joyful, and the band cooks throughout, backing Ornette's melodic and diffuse alto and trumpet playing with power and groove. If you haven't listened to anything by Coleman before, or found him difficult, here's a great album to check out.

9/10 a good CD by O.C. not his best but a good album , well worth having if your interested in Prime Time O.C.s electric band. I think it is an interesting album but get In All Languages first.

3.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment 12 Feb 2013
By Danny Mack - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I confess I bought this CD to listen to Jerry Garcia jam with Ornette Coleman. There's not much of that on this album, and what there is is pretty weak. And while I am a huge jazz fan, I didn't care much for the style of jazz Ornette was playing at this time. Nice cover art though.
